Twins | Kevin Jepsen out as closer

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 23:21:10 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen will be removed from the closer role in the "short term," manager Paul Molitor said Wednesday, June 8. Jepsen has been scored upon in five of his past 11 appearances, and he's 2-5 with a 6.17 ERA in 25 appearances on the season. Molitor said RPs Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad could see ninth-inning duties.

Fantasy Tip: Abad is having a great year with a 0.87 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and just over a strikeout per inning. The 30-year-old has no closing experience at this level, and he's a lefty, which could present matchup issues in the ninth. Kintzler has a 2.30 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP, but he doesn't possess the swing-and-miss stuff you'd like in a closer. However, he already has one save, and he might have the edge over the lefty. Whichever way the team goes, it's expected to be short-lived. Glen Perkins (shoulder) appears to be close to a rehab assignment, and he has a clear path back to his job if he doesn't suffer a setback. If he was dropped in your league, grab and stash him. Abad isn't a bad option for ratios, but Kintzler might be the guy for those desperate for saves. However, bad memories of Ryan Franklin ensue. For Jepsen owners, he appears to have run his course of fantasy viability for now. Unless Perkins suffers a setback, Jepsen's value plummets to AL-only depth.

Twins | Trevor May being scaled back

Tue, 24 May 2016 15:11:50 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Trevor May has been struggling as the setup man, so manager Paul Molitor said he plans to use RPs Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad late in games to take some stress off of May.

Fantasy Tip: May was lights out in April and was gaining steam for a shot at saves with Glen Perkins on the DL and Kevin Jepsen shaky in the ninth. However, an absolutely brutal stretch from May 13 up until last night has changed things. May has allowed 10 earned runs and 14 hits in just 3 1/3 innings in that span. Now he'll pitch in less stressful situations. With Perkins nearing a return, it looks like May's window is closing in order to make an impression for long-term closing duties. If you have more pressing needs in deeper leagues, don't be afraid to cut May loose for now.

Athletics | Back to closer-by-committee?

Wed, 14 May 2014 13:29:53 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle hadn't allowed a run in his last seven outings, and he had 13 strikeouts in that span over 8 1/3 innings entering the game Tuesday, May 13. "He certainly has the stuff to do it," manager Bob Melvin said of Doolittle as potential closer, "but he's so good coming in with guys on base." Doolittle recorded his second save after RP Fernando Abad walked a hitter in the ninth Monday, May 12. Melvin said it appears the team has gone back to a closer-by-committee situation after trying to get RP Jim Johnson back in the closer role. Melvin said that Johnson just isn't there yet.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle was likely dropped by his previous owners in most leagues. If you have the room and could use some potential save chances, to go along with nice peripherals, grab him now.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle nails down save

Tue, 13 May 2014 07:35:31 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out two for his second save Monday, May 12.

Fantasy Tip: RPs Fernando Abad and Jim Johnson were ineffective when they opened the ninth inning. They combined for two runs on two hits and a walk without retiring a batter. Doolittle appears to have the clear path to save chances.

Athletics | Four locks for bullpen

Tue, 18 Mar 2014 20:30:07 -0700

Oakland Athletics RPs Jim Johnson, Luke Gregerson, Sean Doolittle and Dan Otero are each considered locks for the bullpen for manager Bob Melvin. Left-handed RP Fernando Abad is also expected to get one of the vacant bullpen spot, with RP Evan Scribner looking like a good bet for another spot as a long reliever. That likely leaves on spot from a group of Ps Drew Pomeranz, Josh Lindblom, Joe Savery and Arnold Leon. Lindblom is believed to have the edge in the battle.

Nationals | Ryan Mattheus continues to rehab

Tue, 16 Jul 2013 19:01:59 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Ryan Mattheus (hand) moved his minor-league rehab assignment to Double-A Harrisburg Tuesday, July 16. He allowed one run and one hit in an outing for Class A Hagerstown Sunday, July 14. Mattheus has been sidelined since May 19 after he suffered a broken right hand punching a locker. "He probably needs three or four outings to make sure that there's no problem coming back," manager Davey Johnson said. When Mattheus is ready, the team has a difficult decision since RPs Fernando Abad and Ian Krol have performed well lately.
