Reds | Zack Cozart fitted with knee brace

Sat, 05 Dec 2015 12:13:43 -0800

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) said his surgically-repaired right knee feels great and he believes he'll be completely healthy by the time spring training camp opens. He was recently fitted for a knee brace which will allow him to hit, make cuts and perform other assorted baseball activities.

Fantasy Tip: Cozart is not necessarily guaranteed to regain his starting job at shortstop next spring, even though he was on pace to have the best offensive season of his career. His replacement, Eugenio Suarez, performed even better than Cozart at the plate, although his defensive shortcomings may eventually lead the team to move him to a different position. If Suarez wins the competition at shortstop, Cozart won't have much value in any fantasy format. Be sure to monitor this situation in spring training before you consider drafting him.

Reds | Zack Cozart confident he'll be ready

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 14:07:21 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) is confident he'll be ready to go when spring training starts next year after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee this season. He isn't yet allowed to make sharp cuts or quick turns but is doing agility drills, playing catching and doing a normal weight-lifting routine. Cozart will be fitted for a support brace before Thanksgiving.

Fantasy Tip: Cozart was having a career year at the plate before he went down with injury. The unfortunate part is that Eugenio Suarez came in and played even better offensively. It's hard to say how the shortstop position will shake out for Cincy in 2016, but one has to believe that it's Suarez's job to lose, meaning Cozart should be an afterthought in fantasy drafts next year unless something changes between now and then.

Reds | Eugenio Suarez could change positions

Sat, 19 Sep 2015 10:03:12 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Eugenio Suarez is open to changing positions next season, with SS Zack Cozart (knee) expected to regain his starting job in 2016. Suarez has played shortstop exclusively at the major league level but he had 36 games of experience at second base and 51 games at third base in the minors. "I'm ready for anything," he said. "I want to play in the big leagues, any position."

Fantasy Tip: Suarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has had a solid season at the plate, batting .283 with 11 home runs and 44 RBIs through 82 games. The Reds are expected to have a vacancy in left field next season and he would be a better offensive option than anyone the team is throwing out there now, although he has never played the position professionally. If the team decides to convert him to the outfield, don't be surprised if he is sent to play winter ball in order to get accustomed to the position.

Reds | Zack Cozart undergoes surgery

Mon, 15 Jun 2015 23:03:41 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) had surgery on his right knee Monday, June 15, and he is expected to require seven to nine months to recover.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Eugenio Suarez ($2,100; or 4.2% of cap) will continue to see regular playing time, and he comes with a low FantasyScore price tag.

Reds | Zack Cozart done for the year

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 11:40:41 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) suffered torn ligaments and the biceps tendon in his right knee Wednesday, June 10, and he's expected to have surgery Monday, June 15. Cozart's rehab is expected to last roughly nine months.

Fantasy Tip: It's a shame for Cozart and his owners. He was in the midst of a breakout season, hitting .258 (50-for-194) with nine home runs and 28 RBI. This devastating injury will also put his 2016 season in doubt. You can safely drop him in all single-year formats. Kris Negron ($2,000, 4.0% of cap), Ivan De Jesus ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) and Eugenio Suarez could all see time at shortstop now. None of these infielders is particularly intriguing, although De Jesus probably has the most intrigue after homering twice this week.

Reds | Zack Cozart headed for DL

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 14:36:20 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) will land on the disabled list after injuring his right knee Wednesday, June 10, according to manager Bryan Price. The team is awaiting the results of an MRI exam.

Fantasy Tip: Brace yourselves for a prolonged absence if you own Cozart. Kris Negron ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is the likely candidate to take over at shortstop. Negron has just nine hits in 69 at-bats (.130), though, and he's nothing more than a warm body in deep NL-only leagues. Avoid him at FantasyScore.

Reds | Zack Cozart has knee injury

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 10:57:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (knee) injured his right knee in the first inning of the game Wednesday, June 10, and he had to be helped from the field. Cozart fell to the ground and grabbed his right knee immediately after his foot slipped across first base as he tried to beat out a ground ball. He was in plenty of pain as he left the field and wasn't putting any weight on his leg.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for Cozart ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) owners, it looks like he'll need considerable time off after this injury. Check back for more updates on his condition after he undergoes tests to determine a timetable for a return. The Reds' bench isn't very strong, and Kris Negron ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is the likely replacement at shortstop for Cozart. You can ignore Negron at FantasyScore.

Reds | Zack Cozart helped off field

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 09:51:02 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart (leg) left the game Wednesday, June 10, after he fell at first base and grabbed his right leg. He was helped off the field and wasn't able to put any weight on his right leg.

Fantasy Tip: We'll obviously need to wait for more information, but Cozart ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) should be avoided on FantasyScore the next couple of days.

Reds | Zack Cozart leading off against Phils

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 09:16:17 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart is hitting leadoff against Philadelphia Phillies SP Jerome Williams Wednesday, June 10.

Fantasy Tip: Cozart ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) hit his ninth home run of the season last night and faces a nice matchup today against Williams, who has given up at least three earned runs in his last four starts. Hitting atop the order gives Cozart added value today at FantasyScore.

Reds | Zack Cozart leaves the yard

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 19:27:54 -0700

Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart hit his ninth home run of the season during the Reds' 11-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday, June 9. He also drove in three runs to improve his RBI total to 28.

Fantasy Tip: It was Cozart's ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) third home run over the past four games, as he continues his breakout season. Entering the game Tuesday, though, Cozart was sporting a .173 batting average over his past 19 games, and despite the home run, his 1-for-5 showing didn't help the skid. Still, his FantasyScore price is reasonable, so Cozart should be viewed as an upside source of cap relief in favorable matchups going forward, albeit a risky one.
