Brown had been managing the organization's Triple-A Tacoma affiliate. Minor league catching coordinator John Stearns, who had been filling in for Datz, will replace Brown at Tacoma.

The type of cancer was not disclosed and he is still in the process of making decisions regarding different types of treatment. "The good news is that it was caught very early, and I have great support from my wife, my family, Eric (Wedge), the coaches and staff, all the players and the Mariners organization," Datz said in a written statement.
