Mariners | Daren Brown to coach third base

Daren Brown has joined the Seattle Mariners to serve as third base coach in the absence of Jeff Datz, who is battling cancer. Brown had been managing the organization's Triple-A Tacoma affiliate. Minor league catching coordinator John Stearns, who had been filling in for Datz, will replace Brown at Tacoma.

Mariners | Jeff Datz diagnosed with cancer

Seattle Mariners third-base coach Jeff Datz announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer and might be away from the team for part of the season. The type of cancer was not disclosed and he is still in the process of making decisions regarding different types of treatment. "The good news is that it was caught very early, and I have great support from my wife, my family, Eric (Wedge), the coaches and staff, all the players and the Mariners organization," Datz said in a written statement.

Mariners | Coaching staff announced

The Seattle Mariners' 2011 coaching staff was officially announced Friday, Nov. 5, according to The Tacoma News Tribune's Larry LaRue. Carl Willis will serve as the pitching coach, Chris Chambliss will serve as the hitting coach, Jeff Datz will be the third base coach, Jaime Navarro will serve as the bullpen coach, Robby Thompson will serve as the bench coach and Mike Brumley will be the first base coach.

Mariners | Considering several coaches

The Seattle Mariners are considering Detroit Tigers minor league hitting coach Leon Durham and Baltimore Orioles bench coach Jeff Datz for their coaching staff, according to The Seattle Times' Geoff Baker. Durham will be considered for the hitting coach and Datz could become the team's next third base coach.

Orioles | Team pleased with Jeff Datz

Baltimore Orioles bench coach Jeff Datz appears to be a likely candidate to return for the 2011 season because the team was pleased with his work with C Matt Wieters behind the plate, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun. However, there is a possibility Datz could join the coaching staff of Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge because the two worked together for several seasons with the Cleveland Indians.
