Pittsburgh Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage believes free-agent SP A.J. Burnett will choose to call it quits before the 2014 season. In an appearance on The Fan Morning Show in Pittsburgh, Searage said he is preparing for Burnett to retire. "I'm on the percentage point where he's not going to come back. I've got to prepare my guys with no A.J. I've got to prepare the pitching with no A.J. So that's the route I'm going," Searage said.

The Pittsburgh Pirates hired Nick Leyva as their new third base coach Wednesday, Nov. 24, according to The Associated Press. Leyva will also coach the infielders. Pitching coach Ray Searage and bench coach Jeff Banister were retained. Gregg Ritchie has been promoted to the major league staff. Luis Silverio will be the team's first base coach and Euclides Rojas will serve as the bullpen coach.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell has fired bench coach Gary Varsho and pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Varsho will be replaced on an interim basis by minor league field coordinator Jeff Bannister, who will join the team in San Diego Monday, Aug. 9. Kerrigan will be replaced on an interim basis by bullpen coach Ray Searage, who assumed duties Sunday, Aug. 8. "(Russell) felt strongly, and I agreed, that they were no longer the right fit for our staff," general manager Neal Huntington said in a prepared statement.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that Ray Searage will join the big league coaching staff and work closely with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, according to MLB.com's Jen Langosch. Searage has served as a coach in the Pirates organization for the past seven years, including the past two seasons as the pitching coach for Triple-A Indianapolis.
