Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington had previously said OFs Starling Marte and Travis Snider are locked into the corner outfielder jobs, but Friday, Dec. 14, he indicated that a lot of guys will compete for the positions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are about to rein in OF Starling Marte, who is batting .317 with 19 RBIs in 26 games for Escogido of the Dominican Winter League. The club wants Marte to have some quality down time before spring training, and general manager Neal Huntington said Friday, Dec. 7, that the team will tell him to shut it down "sooner rather than later."

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle acknowledged that there will be some tough competitions for roster spots next season, most notably at first base between 1Bs Garrett Jones and Gaby Sanchez, but he also has a decent idea of who his starters will be. "(Andrew) McCutchen will play center, (Clint) Barmes will play short, (Pedro) Alvarez will play third, (Neil) Walker will play second, and (catcher Michael) McKenry is going to be back," Hurdle said in his final pregame media session of the season. "Jones, going in, has added value to find a spot for him." OFs Alex Presley and Jose Tabata will have to fight off OFs Starling Marte and Travis Snider to regain their starting outfield roles.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte (oblique) was activated from the disabled list Friday, Sept. 7, after going 2-for-12 in three minor league rehab games. However, INF Brock Holt has settled into the leadoff spot after going 5-for-11 the last three days. "(But Holt remains on top) based on what I've seen the last four days - the performance and the production. He's been playing at a major league speed. Marte needs to catch up a little bit," manager Clint Hurdle said.
