Athletics | Ryan Madson expected to be setup man

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 10:02:54 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Ryan Madson is expected to serve as the eighth-inning setup man for RP Sean Doolittle, with RPs John Axford and Liam Hendriks.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is coming off an injury marred season, so Madson, and in deeper leagues, Axford, makes sense as fantasy handcuffs to Doolittle. Madson could also be useful for his strikeouts abilities in deeper leagues.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle to continue closing for A's

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 19:15:09 -0800

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle will serve as the team's closer entering the 2016 season, despite their recent acquisitions of RPs John Axford and Ryan Madson, according to general manager David Forst.

Fantasy Tip: The 29-year-old Doolittle made the 2014 American League All-Star team while saving 22 games but only recorded four saves in 12 games during an injury-plagued 2015 campaign. Axford and Madson will serve primarily as set-up men for the A's, although they could see ninth-inning opportunities if Doolittle struggles, gets hurt or needs an occasional break.

Athletics | John Axford agrees with A's

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 08:53:14 -0800

Free-agent RP John Axford (Rockies) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, Dec. 9, pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: The Athletics' closer spot isn't set in stone after Sean Doolittle's 2014 was saddled with injuries. Axford could be a reliever to consider in the final couple of rounds of drafts.

Rockies | John Axford, Rex Brothers designated

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 16:25:23 -0800

Colorado Rockies RPs John Axford and Rex Brothers were designated for assignment Friday, Nov. 20. RP LaTroy Hawkins also retired this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Colorado will surely be looking for some relief help this winter. As it stands now, Tommy Kahnle (two saves in 2015) would be the primary candidate to serve as closer in 2016. Depending on who the Rockies bring in to compete in the late innings, this'll probably be a situation that's not high on fantasy owners closer picture in drafts.

Rockies | John Axford returning to closer role

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 15:22:41 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford "looks like himself" and is returning to the closer role, according to manager Walt Weiss.

Fantasy Tip: Axford is a low-end option for saves, but with the endorsement of his manager, he probably should be owned in all seasonal formats. Just note, he has a 9.82 ERA through 11 innings over his past 12 appearances, and opposing hitters boast a 1.091 OPS against him during the stretch. Only those desperate for saves should chase after Axford.

Rockies | John Axford makes mechanical tweak

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 16:32:12 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford recently discovered a mechanical tweak that may have been responsible for him losing the closer's job. His left foot wasn't turned as far outward when it landed recently, after he allowed just one run and converted all 12 of his save chances in his first 20 outings with the team. In eight appearances since July 20, he blew four saves and allowed 10 runs in just 6 2/3 frames. Since his discovery, he's thrown 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for Axford, he may not get another crack at the ninth-inning duties this year unless Tommy Kahnle falters. Axford does his owners no good unless he's receiving regular save chances.

Rockies | John Axford out as closer

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 11:40:46 -0700

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss has removed RP John Axford from the closer's role for the time being. He has allowed runs in five consecutive appearances, blowing four saves during that stretch. The team is expected to use a closer-by-committee approach for the foreseeable future.

Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain if or when Axford will return to ninth-inning duties. For now, RPs Rafael Betancourt, Tommy Kahnle and Justin Miller could see save opportunities for Colorado.

Rockies | John Axford implodes

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 21:53:10 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford blew a save and took the loss against the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday July 30, allowing two runs on two hits and walking three in one third of an inning.

Fantasy Tip: Axford has now allowed at least one run in five straight appearances, blowing four saves and suffering three losses. Don't be surprised if he ends up being relieved of his closer duties, at least temporarily. If you are hunting for saves, Rafael Betancourt or Boone Logan could be the best bets to replace Axford.

Rockies | John Axford activated

Sat, 04 Jul 2015 16:03:29 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford was activated off the 7-day family emergency list Saturday, July 4.

Fantasy Tip: Axford should resume closing duties immediately. Get him back in your lineups.

Rockies | John Axford returns to team

Fri, 03 Jul 2015 15:33:20 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford returned from the family medical emergency list Friday, July 3.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners should count on Axford returning to the closer role, and he is a low-end source of saves for seasonal owners. It isn't out of the question to hold LaTroy Hawkins, either, especially if you're in a desperation saves chase.
