Indians | John Axford working on control

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 12:49:41 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP John Axford, who has five saves in six chances this year, has been working to lower his high walk rate; through eight games and 6 2/3 innings this year, he has six walks. "It's really just a matter of making sure I attack the hitters," Axford said, "and do that a little more aggressively than what I have been. That still remains a focus of mine when I go out there. I just have to make sure I accomplish it."

Fantasy Tip: Axford's success this year in the closer role will either live or die by how well he controls all of his pitches. He's been a slow starter in his career, but it's concerning to see him walking this many out of the gates. If this trend continues, he could be in line for some shaky outings.

Indians | Skipper not overly concerned about John Axford

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 18:15:59 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP John Axford has allowed six walks over 5 2/3 innings this season, but manager Terry Francona said Tuesday, April 15, that he isn't terribly concerned. "We're pretty early," Francona said. "It's not like he's going out there trying to walk people. I do think that as you settle into the season and the sample size gets bigger, then you can kind of look at stuff like that."

Indians | John Axford starts strong

Thu, 03 Apr 2014 06:42:03 -0700

Cleveland Indians CL John Axford has closed the door on the first two save opportunities without issue. He has allowed no hits and two walks with three strikeouts in two innings of work.

Fantasy Tip: He made some adjustments in St. Louis late last season that really seemed to propel him back onto the right track. He was a sneaky value pick in the back half of drafts that could really pay off.

That leaves Ps Scott Atchison, C.C. Lee, Blake Wood, Carlos Carrasco and Josh Tomlin still in camp as possibilities for one or two jobs available.

Indians | John Axford learned a lot in St. Louis

Sun, 12 Jan 2014 20:48:12 -0800

Cleveland Indians RP John Axford learned plenty in his previous stop with the St. Louis Cardinals. The coaches sat him down last summer after he was acquired, letting him know he had been tipping his pitches. "I recall, sitting in that room when they told me that, a few different games running through my mind, including blown saves, and thinking, 'Maybe that's why they didn't swing at that slider that was just out of the zone'," Axford said. He ended up posting a 1.74 ERA in 13 games with the Cardinals, and posting a 1.59 ERA in six postseason appearances. Axford parlayed that success into a $4.5 million deal which could climb to $6.25 million with incentives.

Indians | Confident in John Axford

Thu, 19 Dec 2013 13:43:54 -0800

The Cleveland Indians are confident that RP John Axford can be a successful closer for them after he made some mechanical adjustments after being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals last year. "He has maintained an elite fastball with a very good secondary pitch," said general manager Chris Antonetti. "As we looked at a lot of information -- subjective information from our scouts, video analysis, analytics -- they all pointed to a bounce back." Axford noted that his velocity was down considerably at the beginning of last season after he pitched in the World Baseball Classic.

Indians | John Axford the closer

Thu, 19 Dec 2013 12:29:08 -0800

The Cleveland Indians officially signed RP John Axford to be their closer next season.

Fantasy Tip: Axford is a low-risk investment for both the Tribe and fantasy gamers that take a chance on him in the late rounds next season. He successfully became less dominant in favor of more control, so don't expect him to return to his double-digit K/9 numbers he displayed in Milwaukee. He still generates enough ground balls to be effective, but he remains volatile if he loses control and allows frequent base runners.
