"That's basically what they did yesterday. They put eight in the box and put pressure on their corners. Then, in the second half, they went back to back to the two-high (safeties) and the running game opened. We like that, too." "That's why he moved in and started the game; because he has shown me that much," Schiano said. "And I don't think he did anything (Friday) night that would say, 'Oh, that wasn't a good move.' I thought he ran the ball well and did some things well. So right now, he's got to continue on that course. He's learning every day. And he's a very open-minded guy. He wants to learn."
Fantasy Tip: With Martin now expected to open the season as the starter, he should be regarded as a solid RB2 or flex option for owners.

Sun, 29 Jul 2012 16:45:20 -0700
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin, as an update to previous reports, is looking the part of a primary running back. Not only is he seeing the large majority of the first-team snaps, he is also staying on the field for third-down/pass-protection snaps. Pass-protection work is an area Martin's competition, LeGarrette Blount, has previously struggled. Martin, a rookie first-round draft choice, has shown a quick burst at the line of scrimmage, is hitting holes decisively and using his speed to make defenders miss once he hits the second layer of a defense.
Head coach Greg Schiano made it a point to say the players haven't played in a live game yet. "You look at them in protection and carrying the ball, but until they have to break a tackle, make someone miss in a game when they're getting tackled live, it's awfully hard to evaluate," Schiano said.
Stephen Holder, of the Tampa Bay Times, notes despite Martin looking the part, it does not mean that Blount is the No. 2 running back; nor does it mean that Blount won't have an important role in the Buccaneers offense this season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount has a new way of carrying the football in hopes of reducing fumbles. Blount's new ballcarrying technique is most commonly described as "high-and-tight." The ball ends up buried between the forearm, the upper arm and the chest, carried a few degrees off of vertical so that it is against one of the numbers on the player's jersey. Former NFL RB Tiki Barber switched to the technique after a nine-fumble campaign in 2003 and had just nine over the next three seasons combined.

Running backs are rarely taken in the first round to ride the pine, so Martin is likely to immediately leap past RB LeGarrette Blount on the team's depth chart. Bucs head coach Greg Schiano has sent out hints that the team wants to run the ball and has implied Blount's pass protection and fumbles could be liabilities for the team.
Tampa Bay gave up second- and fourth-round selections to trade back into the first round to acquire Martin at 31st overall.
