NFL | McKinley Pleads Not Guilty

Former Arizona Cardinals FB Dennis McKinley pleaded not guilty to drug and conspiracy charges on Friday, July 25, according to the Associated Press. McKinley was arrested last month for involvement in an alleged drug ring based in Phoenix. He is charged with 19 counts that include conspiracy, illegal control of an enterprise, marijuana and narcotics violations. An initial pretrial conference was set for Wednesday, Aug. 27 in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Mike Jurecki, of KDUS sports radio, reports Arizona Cardinals FB Dennis McKinley was arrested Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30 a.m., along with several other individuals, in connection to a large-scale marijuana trafficking ring based out of a warehouse paid for by McKinley in Phoenix, Arizona. Reportedly, the drugs were transported all over the country. A Tuesday afternoon press conference has been called to address the situation.

The Arizona Republic reports Arizona Cardinals FB Dennis McKinley has replaced FB Joel Mackovicka in the starting lineup. While McKinley started last week because Mackovicka (hamstring) was inactive, he will most likely start again this week even though Mackovicka is healthy. Head coach Dave McGinnis said if McKinley is active, he would be the team’s new starter.

The Arizona Republic reports the Arizona Cardinals will not pursue a TE at this time due to their cap situation. "Cap-wise, we're not able to bring a veteran in here," coach Dave McGinnis said. "And with the injury situation we're in at other positions, it's hard to find a position to cut somebody in order to bring somebody in." With starting TE Terry Hardy (shoulder) out two to three weeks, the Cardinals will rely on Tywan Mitchell, who has caught eight passes in two NFL seasons. His backup will be FB Dennis McKinley.

Head coach Dave McGinnis said he thinks Hardy will miss more than one week with the injury. TE Tywan Mitchell will be starting for Hardy if he is unable to play. McGinnis said that FB Dennis McKinley could also be used to replace Hardy in certain situations.

The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis said TE Terry Hardy (shoulder) is undergoing an evaluation to determine the extent of his injury. He bruised his right shoulder on the first Cardinals drive during yesterday's game. Tywan Mitchell, who is not as sure-handed as Hardy, would have to start if Hardy is OUT. McGinnis said fullback Dennis McKinley, who sat out the last two games with a sore hamstring, might be moved to tight end as Mitchell's backup. If that happens, the team may also have rookie RB Marcel Shipp active this week.

The Arizona Republic reports Monday marked the first time all three of the Arizona Cardinals' fullbacks were healthy for an entire practice. However, it didn’t last. Dennis McKinley missed Tuesday morning's workout because of a groin injury. Joel Makovicka reinjured his hamstring in Tuesday morning's practice. He is out indefinitely. Paul Shields was the only healthy FB and the team moved Tevita Ofahengaue from fullback to round out the tight end position.

Also, three defensive linemen, Andre Wadsworth (knee), Corey Sears (knee) and Brad Ottis (neck), didn't practice. Wadsworth had fluid drained from his left knee.

The Arizona Republic reports the contract details of the three picks the Cards signed today. Paris Johnson signed a contract worth about $840,000. The deal included salaries of $175,000, $250,000 and $325,000 and a signing bonus of between $90,000 and $95,000. Melvin Bradley and Dennis McKinley, chosen four picks apart, received identical deals worth $792,000. They each were paid signing bonuses of $42,000 and have yearly salaries of $175,000, $250,000 and $325,000.
