Mon, 17 Jun 2013 14:33:20 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said RP Carlos Marmol will remain in the seventh and eighth innings of games, and he won't be an option to close when RP Kevin Gregg is unavailable. Fantasy Tip: James Russell is probably the most likely candidate to fill in in the ninth if Gregg is injured or needs a break. Shawn Camp is another possibility. Neither should be owned unless you're desperate for saves vultures in deep NL leagues.
Sun, 02 Jun 2013 18:00:29 -0700 The Chicago Cubs might consider dealing P James Russell sometime before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
Wed, 06 Mar 2013 14:39:23 -0800 Chicago Cubs RPs Kyuji Fujikawa, Carlos Marmol, Shawn Camp and James Russell are locks for the bullpen, and the team will have to decide on Rule 5 pick RP Hector Rondon.
Fri, 18 Jan 2013 15:42:19 -0800 The Chicago Cubs avoided arbitration with Ps Jeff Samardzija and James Russell Friday, Jan. 18, by agreeing to one-year deals with both. Samardzija will make $2.64 million and Russell will earn $1.075 million. Samardzija has a chance to make an extra $125,000 in performance bonuses.
Sat, 01 Dec 2012 10:36:07 -0800 The Chicago Cubs have offered arbitration to SPs Matt Garza and Jeff Samardzija, RP James Russell and 2B Luis Valbuena.
Wed, 13 Jun 2012 05:25:13 -0700 Chicago Cubs RP Shawn Camp picked up the save Tuesday, June 12, while RP James Russell pitched in the seventh inning.
Wed, 30 May 2012 15:51:21 -0700 Chicago Cubs RP James Russell pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation to pick up the win against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, May 30. Russell gave up two hits and struck out one in the 13-pitch outing.
Wed, 30 May 2012 05:11:57 -0700 Chicago Cubs RP James Russell recorded his first career save Tuesday, May 29. RP Shawn Camp pitched 1 1/3 innings in setup duty.
Sun, 27 May 2012 10:03:18 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum has announced that RP Rafael Dolis will no longer be the team's closer and will serve as a middle reliever for the immediate future. Dolis walked two batters against the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, May 26, and hit 1B Matt Hague to force in the winning run. RPs Shawn Camp and James Russell appear to be in line to get some save opportunities, along with RP Carlos Marmol (back), who is expected to be activated from the disabled list Monday, May 28, or Tuesday, May 29. Fantasy Tip: Marmol's impending return complicates this picture. If he shows vast improvement out of the gate - especially in throwing strikes - he could get his job back sooner rather than later. He's a solid bet to retake the reins at some point and as a long-term play should be scooped up everywhere. Caution: You may miss out on at least a few closures in the near future.
Fri, 04 May 2012 09:46:14 -0700 Updating previous reports, the Chicago Cubs will use a "closer-by-committee" approach to the ninth inning between RPs James Russell and Rafael Dolis, with Russell likely to see most of those assignments. However, the matchups could dictate the pitcher used.
