The Atlanta Braves have acquired INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio and RP James Russell from the Chicago Cubs.
Fantasy Tip: Bonifacio will fill a utility role for the Braves. He is unlikely to see everyday at-bats, if the Braves remain healthy. With semi-regular at-bats, Bonifacio retains NL-only and deep mixed league value, due to his base stealing ability. Bonifacio could also push Tommy La Stella for playing time at the keystone position. Russell fills the left-handed-pitching void in the Braves' bullpen, but he has no fantasy value.

If he is not dealt at the trading deadline, Chicago Cubs RP James Russell has indicated he would like to start for the Cubs. "If we were to get a bunch of free-agent pitchers that were starters and bring them here, I could see a reason why I would stay in the bullpen," he said. "If we don't do that, I don't see the harm in getting the chance. But it's really not up to me."

Chicago Cubs RP James Russell was the subject of many trade talks over the weekend, thanks primarily to his 2.22 ERA and a strand rate of nearly 83 percent. Russell is pitching on a one-year, $1.775 million contract and is arbitration-eligible for 2015.

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon was saddled with the loss after allowing a game-winning single in the ninth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, May 4, and manager Rick Renteria made it clear that he wanted to stick with Rondon in a tie ballgame. "In the end, with the strength of Hector, regardless of who he's facing, lefty or righty, it's a good match for him," Renteria said. RP Wesley Wright was warming in the bullpen to face Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter, but Renteria chose to stick with Rondon. Wright appears to have passed RP James Russell as the high-leverage lefty in the bullpen. Rondon said he felt strong despite pitching in his fourth game in the last five days.
Fantasy Tip: The outing was disappointing for Rondon owners, but the silver lining here is the fact that Renteria trusts Rondon as his closer, even in a tied game and facing a left-handed hitter. It cements the notion that he's the unquestioned man for the ninth inning right now in Chicago.

Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said RP Jose Veras will be taken out of the closer role for now.
Fantasy Tip: The team has not named a replacement at this point, but Pedro Strop and James Russell are the most likely options to receive save opportunities. Strop probably would get the first chance to close a game. Owners looking for saves can consider adding one of these relievers, but there is a chance Veras regains the job at some point.
