Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he didn't want to sit SS Starlin Castro Sunday, Aug. 18, despite the fact that he made more mental errors Saturday, Aug. 17. Castro entered the day Sunday hitting .244 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs on the year, and he was 0-for-16 in the last five games. "I don't think this kid can get better by not playing today and understanding the adversity that we all go through in a game," Sveum said before the game.

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro was benched by manager Dale Sveum after making a mental mistake during the fifth inning of the game against the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday, Aug. 17. With the bases loaded and one out, Castro caught a fly ball in shallow left field off the bat of 2B Matt Carpenter. He hesitated to throw home after putting his head down, allowing Jon Jay to score from third base and letting the other runners advance. INF Donnie Murphy shifted over from third base to shortstop for the sixth inning, with INF Cody Ransom coming off the bench to play the hot corner. Castro returned to the lineup Sunday, Aug. 18.

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro is 11-for-46 (.239) in 12 games in August with no doubles, no home runs and one RBI. "You've got to be able to hit the fastball, and if you can't hit the fastball, you'll struggle in this league," manager Dale Sveum said. "The bottom line is laying off the breaking ball." Castro has had many moving parts in his swing this year that has caused him to miss the fastball, and hitting coach James Rowson has tried to get Castro to quiet things down and eliminate movement.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum and the hitting coaches have gotten SS Starlin Castro to get his weight shift back on his back leg again, and the tweak in his form at the plate is starting to pay off. He went 6-for-13 with a pair of home runs before the All-Star break. "I am looking for the fastball every time now," Castro said. "I was late to the fastball and now I am adjusting to looking for fastballs. You can't hit a good slider (anyway), you can only hit a hanging slider. If you are looking for a fastball you can hit it."

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro is taking the day off Tuesday, June 25, his first day off after starting 269 straight games. He's hitting a career-low .228 on the season. Castro is hitting only .131 in June with no home runs and three RBIs. "Failure is innate in baseball; it's inevitable," president Theo Epstein said. "It's actually an important part in the development of the development process. Starlin is someone who went very quickly through the upper minor leagues. If you look at the number of at-bats he had at the Double-A and Triple-A level, there are not very many and he was in the big leagues instantly and had success."
Fantasy Tip: This might be the perfect time to buy low on Castro if his current owner has clearly given up on him. If you're planning to ride this out, you should probably keep him on your bench until he receives a spark. If you haven't already, build depth behind him.

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein said he does not believe SS Starlin Castro has regressed even though his numbers are down this season. "I do not believe Starlin Castro has regressed one iota. His numbers are down," Epstein said. "But that's part of the development process. I have every bit of faith in Starlin being an impact player."

Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro was hitting 4-for-26 on the last road trip, heading into Thursday, June 20. His average has dropped to .235. Manager Dale Sveum, however, doesn't want to give Castro a day off and agreed with president Theo Epstein's assertion that Castro has regressed.
Fantasy Tip: Castro could be a solid buy-low candidate in fantasy leagues at the right price, but if his owner is holding out for Castro's expensive draft-day cost, it's not worth doing.

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado might give Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. a run for his money. Since having his contract selected from Double-A Bowie Aug. 9, 2012, Machado has played all 1,093 innings for the Orioles heading into the game Friday, June 14, against the Boston Red Sox. It is the longest streak of consecutive innings in the American League, and second longest in the majors behind Chicago Cubs SS Starlin Castro (1,302).
