Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon (elbow) will need Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and will miss the entire 2014 season, according to general manager Dave Dombrowski. Rondon was a candidate to be the team's eighth-inning setup man this season. The Tigers have other candidates to fill Rondon's spot, like RPs Joba Chamberlain, Al Alburquerque, Ian Krol, Evan Reed, Luke Putkonen and Phil Coke, but the team isn't locked in to any one guy.

The Tigers now have every player on their 40-man roster under contract for the 2014 season.

The Detroit Tigers traded SP Doug Fister to the Washington Nationals Monday, Dec. 2, in exchange for 2B Steve Lombardozzi, SP Ian Krol and P Robbie Ray. SP Drew Smyly will move into the rotation in Detroit to replace Fister. Ray is expected to start next year in the minor leagues. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said dealing Fister had nothing to do with the hopes that they can sign SP Max Scherzer to a long-term contract before he becomes a free agent. Lombardozzi will serve as a utility infielder for the Tigers.

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano was pulled from what started as a non-save situation by acting manager Randy Knorr, who was filling in for the ejected Davey Johnson. Soriano had already given up two runs and left two runners on base. RP Ian Krol blew the save, leaving Soriano charged with four earned runs allowed, but wound up with the win when the Nats won it in the ninth.
Fantasy Tip: The article mentions Knorr's disappointment that Soriano wasn't as intense during the non-save spot as he is during his opportunities to untuck. Whatever the fallout from this, it won't matter for Soriano's job security; it's merely a black eye on his ERA..

Washington Nationals RP Ryan Mattheus (hand) moved his minor-league rehab assignment to Double-A Harrisburg Tuesday, July 16. He allowed one run and one hit in an outing for Class A Hagerstown Sunday, July 14. Mattheus has been sidelined since May 19 after he suffered a broken right hand punching a locker. "He probably needs three or four outings to make sure that there's no problem coming back," manager Davey Johnson said. When Mattheus is ready, the team has a difficult decision since RPs Fernando Abad and Ian Krol have performed well lately.

The Washington Nationals called up 3B Anthony Rendon from Triple-A Syracuse and P Ian Krol from Double-A Harrisburg Tuesday, June 4, and designated RPs Henry Rodriguez and Zach Duke for assignment in corresponding moves.
Fantasy Tip: Rendon was moved to second base at Syracuse with Danny Espinosa (wrist) ailing. It's not official yet, but it looks as though Espinosa will head to the disabled list. Rendon, although he's not starting tonight, should see plenty of playing time alongside Steve Lombardozzi at the keystone. Rendon should hit better than he did in his first call-up, especially now that he'll have frequent playing time over a longer period of time. Scoop him up wherever he's available.
