The Detroit Tigers do not have any idea who will replace SP Doug Fister (side) in the rotation. "I have no idea who's going to start," manager Jim Leyland said. "Don't ask. Please. I have no clue. I just told you that. There's no sense searching. I have no clue. I keep trying to make that perfectly clear to you guys, but you keep searching. I have no clue who's going to start. None." Ps Andrew Oliver and Casey Crosby are both options to be recalled.

Tigers | Rotation spot down to two

The Detroit Tigers' No. 5 rotation spot is now down to just SPs Drew Smyly and Duane Below after SP Andrew Oliver was optioned to Triple-A Toledo Thursday, March 29. Oliver went 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA in 15 2/3 Grapefruit League frames. He walked 10 and struck out 10.

Detroit Tigers SP Andrew Oliver gave up seven runs (six earned) and seven hits while walking two in three Grapefruit League innings against the Houston Astros Tuesday, March 27, as he attempts to win a starting rotation spot. It was his second erratic start in a row.

Detroit Tigers SP Doug Fister (finger) has been scratched from his spring start Wednesday, March 28, with middle finger soreness. SP Drew Smyly will start instead Wednesday, and SP Andrew Oliver will start again Sunday, April 1, as they battle for a spot in the starting rotation. SP Duane Below will pitch in relief in his next outing.

Detroit Tigers SP Drew Smyly tossed four scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves in a minor league game Thursday, March 22, giving up two hits, both on broken bats. He walked one and struck out seven as he tries to win the No. 5 rotation spot. Smyly is competing with SPs Andrew Oliver, Duane Below and Adam Wilk. Smyly has a 1.13 ERA in eight innings this spring, which is tops among the four candidates.

Detroit Tigers SP Andrew Oliver, who is competing for a rotation spot, walked five in 3 2/3 innings in his Grapefruit League start Wednesday, March 21. "I was just a little bit out of rhythm, a little bit too slow, trying to go through my mechanics. The rhythm was too slow trying to get everything to sync up. That was probably the biggest thing. ... My body was going a little too quick for my arm," Oliver said. He has a history of command problems; he walked 80 batters in 147 innings with Triple-A Toledo last season.
