Phillies | Ryan Howard, Cesar Hernandez out of lineup

Sun, 29 May 2016 08:19:16 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard and Cesar Hernandez are not in the starting lineup against Chicago Cubs SP John Lackey Sunday, May 29. INF Andres Blanco will bat third and play second base, while 1B Tommy Joseph will bat fifth and start at first base. In addition, OF Tyler Goeddel is back in the lineup as the left fielder and will bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph carries a four-game hitting streak into Sunday's contest and is batting .290 with two homers and four RBI through 31 at-bats, while Goeddel is batting .313 through 64 at-bats this month. Both players can be viewed as productive sources of salary cap relief in DFS.

Phillies | Ryan Howard not in the lineup

Sun, 22 May 2016 09:57:44 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup against Atlanta Braves SP Casey Kelly Sunday, May 22. 1B Tommy Joseph will start at first base and is batting fourth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph has gone 4-for-12 with one home run and one RBI since being recalled from the minor leagues. Joseph should be a starting option in some daily fantasy leagues, but owners in mixed leagues should find better options.

Phillies | Strict platoon at 1B for Phils

Fri, 20 May 2016 14:20:42 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph likely won't see much action this weekend against an Atlanta Braves rotation that is heavily right-handed. Joseph is 4-for-10 with a home run since being called up from Class AAA Lehigh Valley last Friday. Head coach Pete Mackanin is heavily committed to a platoon at first base with Joseph and 1B Ryan Howard, with Howard seeing most of the starts against righties.

Fantasy Tip: Both Joseph and Howard can be useful in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues for their power strokes, but be mindful that Howard will kill your average (.168/.236/.398 line with eight bombs). Joseph has limited upside in the current setup but has a much higher ceiling.

Phillies | Ryan Howard back in the lineup

Wed, 18 May 2016 07:32:11 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard returned to the lineup at cleanup Wednesday, May 18, with 1B Tommy Joseph sitting out.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph had a strong couple of games against two lefties. It looks like he's the right-handed complement to Howard now. Howard has four hits this month (.114), but three of them left the park. He's a boom-or-bust play against Tom Koehler.

Phillies | Tommy Joseph busts out, hits first HR

Tue, 17 May 2016 22:51:22 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph went 3-for-4 in his third major league game Tuesday, May 17, against the Miami Marlins. One of the hits was his first career home run, as he finished the night with one RBI and one run scored.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph was having a really nice showing at Class AAA Lehigh Valley, where he produced a .347/.370/.611 line in 27 ballgames, so perhaps this is what gets him started as a major leaguer. The former second-round draft pick deserves a flier in NL-only leagues if he can continue to hit in the heart of the order.

Phillies | Tommy Joseph starting vs. Marlins

Mon, 16 May 2016 12:10:57 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph is starting at first base and batting fifth against Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley Monday, May 16. 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Howard rarely plays against left-handed pitchers, and with Joseph's promotion, you can expect him to see starts against lefties and maybe the odd right-handed arm. Joseph posted a .347/.370/.611 slash line through 100 plate appearances with Class AAA Lehigh Valley this season before joining Philadelphia, and he is a potential grab in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Phillies | Quiet debut for Tommy Joseph

Fri, 13 May 2016 19:25:15 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph went 0-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and two strikeouts in his major league debut Friday, May 13.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph was hitting .347 in the minors, so he could be worth a flier in a NL-only leagues.

Phillies | Tommy Joseph making major league debut

Fri, 13 May 2016 14:05:00 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Tommy Joseph is starting at first base and is batting sixth against Cincinnati Reds SP Brandon Finnegan in his major league debut Friday, May 13. 1B Ryan Howard is starting on the bench against the left-hander. C Carlos Ruiz is in the cleanup spot.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph was tearing it up in the minors and is finally healthy after three concussions in previous seasons. He should at least platoon with Howard at first base and face and is worth the immediate pickup in dynasty and NL-only leagues. Ruiz has looked much better this year at the plate than last and is certainly worth a low-priced flier in daily formats if you're looking to save money at the position against Finnegan.

Phillies | Tommy Joseph healthy and improved

Fri, 13 May 2016 11:18:09 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies C/1B Tommy Joseph said he's finally healthy after suffering concussions in 2012, 2013 and 2015 that resulted in a move to first base. He also underwent vision and eye therapy because of his concussions and found that he had astigmatism in his right eye. Joseph now wears contact lens in his eye. He also has improved his conditioning, dropping to 225 pounds this year after weighing 250 pounds in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph was really impressing at Class AAA Lehigh Valley with a league-leading .347 average and .981 OPS to go along with six home runs and 17 RBI. The rebuilding Phils could certainly use some more offense, and Joseph could give it to them against left-handed pitchers at first base. Ryan Howard, who is hitting under .200, will be hurt even more by Joseph's call-up.

Phillies | Tommy Joseph being called up

Fri, 13 May 2016 09:14:03 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies C Tommy Joseph is being called up from the minors Friday, May 13, according to sources. Joseph leads the International League in OPS (.624).

Fantasy Tip: That's bad news for both Carlos Ruiz and Cameron Rupp. It's unlikely that Joseph is being called up to sit the bench. There's a possibility Joseph could also split time with Ryan Howard at first base. The 24-year-old was hitting .347 (33-for-95) with six home runs and 17 RBI for Class AAA Lehigh Valley. He's worth a flyer in dynasty and NL-only leagues. Watch him everywhere else to see if he sees significant playing time.
