San Diego Padres OF Wil Myers played three innings at first base Sunday, March 29, and he could play there during the season, according to manager Bud Black.
Fantasy Tip: Outfield defense is a potential weakness for the Padres, and Myers ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) playing a little first base would allow Cameron Maybin ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) to man center field. The occasional start at first base has little impact on Myers' fantasy value, and he remains an excellent rebound target in the middle rounds of seasonal drafts. At his price point, Myers is a nice FantasyScore target in favorable matchups, too. Maybin is an excellent source of cap relief with upside when he plays.

San Diego Padres OF Wil Myers is coming along fine playing center field in spring training, according to manager Bud Black. "Wil's doing great," Black said. "I'm very positive on him. Wil is moving in center. He has long strides, good routes, good angles. His hands are good. He sees the ball off the bat. And he has the desire to play center field. We've got another good center fielder in Cameron Maybin. We feel we have center field covered. Myers is going to be fine." Myers has had trouble taking direction, though, and may be a "work in progress," according to a source. Myers doesn't lack confidence, though, and the Tampa Bay Rays may have thought he was trending toward slightly cocky. Myers is taking his trade from Tampa Bay as a chance to prove them wrong, and he's playing with a chip on his shoulder.
Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners could care less if Myers is successful in center field. The biggest question for Myers is how he'll bounce back from a disappointing 2014 and if his wrist injury will continue to sap him of his power, especially with the move to pitcher-friendly Petco Park. Myers' prospect hype has fizzled a bit heading into 2015, but he still has enough of a power-speed combo worth speculating on in the later rounds of mixed leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels is still a trade option for the San Diego Padres. However, other teams are also in the mix, and it's unknown how likely the Padres are to acquire the lefty. One executive thinks the Padres may have a better chance than other teams to land Hamels because of their decent prospect list. However, the Phillies reportedly are looking for a "huge" package in return for Hamels. Trade scenarios discussed between the two teams aren't believed to include OF Wil Myers.
