Rays | Wil Myers hitting .300 on the farm

Wed, 17 Apr 2013 08:35:54 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Wil Myers is hitting .317 with nine RBIs in 41 at-bats at Triple-A Durham.

Fantasy Tip: He has also struck out 12 times, which isn't too shabby for a power hitter. He hasn't hit a home run yet, though. The team's offense is sputtering and really needs a boost. However, they are so cost conscious, they may try to hold off another 6-7 weeks until the Super Two deadline passes. Myers could come up at any time.

Rays | Want Wil Myers to be a complete player

Wed, 27 Feb 2013 05:25:05 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said Tampa Bay Rays OF Wil Myers will start the season at Triple-A Durham and the team wants him to focus on being a complete player. Maddon was careful to not criticize the Kansas City Royals' development of Myers, but he said there's a tendency industry-wide "to overlook things" with elite prospects. Maddon had a talk with Myers a few days ago about how, starting in spring training, they want him to work on specifics such as footwork in the outfield, leads on the bases, etc.

Rays | Plan on being cautious with Wil Myers

Tue, 26 Feb 2013 13:15:48 -0800

The Tampa Bay Rays seem to want to be extremely cautious with OF Wil Myers' development, especially since this spring is the first time they have really laid eyes on him themselves. "We've obviously read a lot of scouting reports, watched a lot of video, talked to a lot of guys who have seen him play," vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "And that's great. That's obviously a very important part of the process of acquiring players. But I think you end up knowing more about a guy after you've been around him for a week or two than you do from watching a guy play for three games. So we're anxious to learn all of the different things about him and how he goes about his work, etc., that you can't possibly know without being around him." The Rays are devoting plenty of time to developing his progress as an outfielder. The team won't rule out the possibility of him making an impact this year, but they aren't making any bets on it.

Fri, 22 Feb 2013 16:17:40 -0800

The Tampa Bay Rays coaching staff doesn't intend to mess with OF Wil Myers' development much, aside from emphasizing the fundamentals and making sure he's unafraid to make mistakes as he tries to enter the big leagues. "Trust the process," executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "If guys are able to do that, because of their natural ability, we're really confident that the outcome will be good." Myers is expected to begin the year at Triple-A Durham.

Rays | Won't rush Wil Myers to majors

Sun, 23 Dec 2012 00:33:19 -0800

Consensus among team sources is that Tampa Bay Rays OF Wil Myers will not be rushed to the major leagues immediately, in part to delay the start of his service-time clock. "I've always felt that it should be easier for a young player to make the team season in progress as opposed to out of spring training," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It's not an easy place to be, because you go from spring training when people are getting ready to the season, when they turn it up a notch."
