Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said SS Didi Gregorius will compete with SSs Willie Bloomquist and Cliff Pennington for the job at shortstop in spring training. "If he had to go back to Triple-A, I don't think it's such a bad thing. I think Triple-A at-bats would be good for him. Fortunately, we're in a situation where we've got depth at that area. Long term, having a guy like him and (Triple-A shortstop) Chris Owings, we've got two, I think industry-wide, two of the best young middle infielders in the game," Towers said about Gregorius. One talent evaluator said Gregorius could play in the big leagues right away.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will shop for a shortstop in the offseason. The team doesn't seem convinced SS Jake Elmore is more than a part-time player, and they don't believe SS Chris Owings will be ready next season.

Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Matt Davidson, SS Chris Owings, 3B Cody Ransom, 2B Rusty Ryal and 3B Ryan Wheeler are all non-roster invitees who will be competing for a roster spot in spring training. Position players will report Feb. 25, with the first full-squad workout Feb. 26.
