The Associated Press reports free agent TE Jay Riemersma is retiring from the NFL, according to his agent.

The Associated Press reports former NFL TE Jay Riemersma is coaching Zeeland East High School in Michigan. He agreed to take the interim job to help friend and former teammate Steve Turner. Riemersma is fresh from a nine-year career in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers released him after a torn Achilles' tendon ended his 2004 season in December. He has not received any offers as a free agent.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers will save $1.3 million in salary cap room after releasing TE Jay Riemersma earlier this week. Riemersma will still count $253,000 against the team's cap next season.

Jerry DiPaola, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have numerous candidates capable of performing the long-snapping duties for the team, but incumbent LS/C Mike Schneck continues to prove his value to the team each season. "Let's be honest," special teams coach Kevin Spencer said, "I don't think we're ever going to compromise. We have to have a guy who can be effective and get the job done. But we're not going to go with a lesser guy just because he can play another position. That's why Mike is still here." The other players competing for the job include C Chance Pearce, TE Jay Riemersma, OL Todd Fordham and rookie C Drew Caylor.

"It's an area I have to concentrate on," Riemersma said. "It's especially crucial to this team and this organization, from the tight end perspective. We have to be accomplished blockers in this offense."

Updating previous reports, Joe Starkey, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jay Riemersma (shoulder) has made solid progress in his rehab from post-season shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff suffered last season. "I'm actually stronger right now than I was during the season last year," Riemersma said. "It's going to be a night-and-day difference." Riemersma expects to be fully recovered in time for training camp this summer.
