Padres | Robbie Erlin needs Tommy John surgery

Tue, 03 May 2016 16:09:53 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery to fix a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, according to manager Andy Green.

Fantasy Tip: It's a tough break for a young pitcher trying to find his way in the major leagues. Erlin made just two starts this year before being injured, and he posted a 4.76 ERA in three starts in 2015. Upside remains as a ground-ball pitcher that relies on his control, but he timeline is slowed considerably now. Colin Rea could stick in the rotation all year now.

Padres | Robbie Erlin has throwing halted

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 12:04:11 -0700

San Deigo Padres SP Robbie Erlin (elbow) has been backed off from throwing, and the organization could require him to undergo further evaluations on the muscular strain in his left arm. Erlin might still begin throwing again during the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers that starts Friday, April 29, though.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Erlin doesn't have value outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only formats, but these potential complications are still concerning. Continue to check back for updates, but it looks like Erlin could miss more than the minimal stay on the 15-day disabled list.

Padres | No MRI for Robbie Erlin

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 15:19:56 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin (elbow) is just dealing with a muscular issue in his arm and isn't scheduled to undergo an MRI exam, according to manager Andy Green.

Fantasy Tip: That's good news for Erlin, and it might mean he can return from his DL stint when he's eligible. He had been pitching well in the rotation but doesn't have enough upside to warrant holding in standard fantasy leagues. Stay tuned for who the Friars will use to start against the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend.

Padres | Robbie Erlin placed on disabled list

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 13:12:15 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow strain Thursday, April 21. In a corresponding move, RP Leonel Campos was recalled from Class AAA El Paso.

Fantasy Tip: Erlin's ownership should have been limited to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues, and given his minimal fantasy upside, there isn't a lot of incentive to stash him. Campos isn't a viable fantasy option at this point.

Diamondbacks | Quintet of Arizona hitters catch a break

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 12:02:26 -0700

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt, OF David Peralta, 2B Jean Segura, OF Socrates Brito and C Welington Castillo are not in the lineup on Sunday, April 17, against San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin. 2B/OF Rickie Weeks will start in left and bat second, INF Phil Gosselin will play first base and hit third, INF/OF Brandon Drury will move to second base and bat fifth, OF Chris Owings will man center and bat seventh while C Chris Herrmann will set up behind the plate and hit eighth.

Fantasy Tip: For some perspective on how much offensive firepower Arizona is resting on Sunday, Yasmany Tomas moves up from eighth in Saturday's lineup to fourth in today's order. In the wake of last night's 14-inning marathon, the most recommended plays could the pitchers (Erlin and Patrick Corbin), each of whom will face a lineup missing about a good chunk of its regular hitters.

Padres | No support for Robbie Erlin

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 23:47:43 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin allowed just one earned run, three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over six innings Tuesday, April 12, against the Philadelphia Phillies, but he took the loss with his team getting shut out.

Fantasy Tip: Erlin deserved a much better fate with another quality start. He has an 0.93 ERA in two outings so far, and might start catching the eye of fantasy owners in most NL-only fantasy leagues and DFS play if he continues to pitch this effectively. We'll find out a lot about Erlin when he squares off against Patrick Corbin and the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday.

Padres | Robbie Erlin to pitch in bullpen

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 09:53:37 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin was called up to pitch out of the bullpen Friday, April 8, with RP Matt Thornton (Achilles') landing on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: The Friars want another lefty in their 'pen with Thornton sidelined. Erlin was a candidate for the starting rotation in spring training, but he'll have to pitch out of relief for now. He won't have any fantasy value unless he's in the rotation, and even then he's limited to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Padres | Robbie Erlin sent down

Sun, 03 Apr 2016 09:34:08 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin was sent to the minors Sunday, April 3.

Fantasy Tip: That means that Colin Rea won the final rotation spot for the Friars. The young right-hander is a control artist who keeps the ball on the ground, which should play well at Petco Park. However, he can be up and down and doesn't strike out many hitters. He's an option in NL-only leagues, but keep him on your radar for now in all other mixed formats.

Padres | SD's rotation competition

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 11:17:27 -0700

San Diego Padres SPs Colin Rea, Brandon Morrow, Robbie Erlin and Drew Pomeranz are battling for the final two rotation spots behind SPs Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner.

Fantasy Tip: Because of his extensive injury history, Morrow seems the least likely to win a job and the most unattractive to fantasy owners. Pomeranz is transitioning to a starting role and perhaps is the most attractive for a low investment late in deep mixed affairs. Youngsters Rea and Erlin will both be worth a late-round investment if they win jobs, too.

Padres | SD's rotation competition

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 14:57:39 -0800

San Diego Padres SPs Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner are penciled in the starting rotation. SPs Brandon Maurer, Colin Rea, Robbie Erlin, Carlos Villanueva and Drew Pomeranz will compete for the final two spots this spring. SP Brandon Morrow could also be in the mix.

Fantasy Tip: Maurer probably present the most upside of the group because of his strikeout abilities, but how well will he transition from reliever to starter? Pomeranz also presents some intriguing upside if he wins a job, but he may be better off in relief, as well. Stay tuned for who wins these final jobs. They could both certainly be worth a late-round flier in deep mixed formats.
