"Robbie did a great job for us, just what we needed," manager Bud Black said Sunday. The San Diego Padres recalled RP Brad Boxberger from the minors Thursday, May 2, and optioned SP Robbie Erlin in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Erlin was knocked around in his major league debut against the Cubs last night. Boxberger was up and down between the Padres and their top farm club last year. He was effective with San Diego in relief thanks to his nasty fastball-slider combination. For fantasy purposes, though, he can be ignored since he'll be serving in middle relief.

The San Diego Padres officially recalled SP Robbie Erlin from Triple-A Tucson Wednesday, April 24, and optioned RP Thad Weber to Tucson in a corresponding move. Also, 2B Logan Forsythe (foot) was moved to the 60-day disabled list.

The San Diego Padres are expected to call up SP Robbie Erlin from Triple-A Tucson.
Fantasy Tip: One of the most polished walk-suppressing arms in the minors, Erlin has stumbled a little early on in 2013. It's probably an adjustment in his first Class AAA work while also trying to regain form after last year's elbow tendonitis. He's aggressive in the strike zone, and his stuff plays above his 5-foot-11, 190-pound frame.
How long will he stay in the bigs? PETCO Park still isn't a hitter's haven, which should aid his deep-mixed value as a speculative add. There's not an immediate rotation spot open, but he could work his way into there, if not bump Andrew Cashner immediately. That's not likely, though; Erlin may just serve as depth initially and command patience from those who take a stab.

San Diego Padres Ps Robbie Erlin, Kevin Quackenbush and Jason Ray have been sent to minor league camp.

The San Diego Padres have several open starting rotation spots after SPs Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez and Jason Marquis. Ps Anthony Bass, Casey Kelly, Tyson Ross, Eric Stults, Freddy Garcia and Robbie Erlin are all in the picture. SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) is about two weeks behind the other pitchers. SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin went 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA in the Arizona Fall League. He struck out 31 batters and walked six in 23 2/3 innings.

San Diego Padres SP Robert Erlin, who dealt with tendonitis in his left elbow for three months this year, worked on speeding up his mechanics and his delivery over the latter part of the season. Erlin is pitching for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League, where he is currently 0-1 with a 4.22 ERA over 10 2/3 innings. Erlin's elbow hasn't given him any trouble since earlier this year. "When I had a slow tempo, hitters had a lot more time to get comfortable in the box; they had so much time to sit there and get their timing down," Erlin said. "When I was faster, my fastball is a little more deceptive and it could make them jump more at my offspeed pitches."
