He said he probably threw the pitch seven to 10 times in his last start. Manager Terry Francona said he does not want McAllister to use the pitch too often since he is still working on improving the pitch.

It was his first win since beating the Boston Red Sox on Aug. 11. The rookie was 4-1 with a 3.17 ERA in his first eight starts after being called up from Triple-A Columbus. He has yielded three runs or fewer in 16 of 22 starts overall.

"It's very late in the season," manager Manny Acta said. "He could be fatigued. Some of these guys are playing an extra month than they have played in the past. We're still very impressed with the way he's gone about his business here every five days." McAllister has thrown a career-high 176 innings between the minors and majors this season, and he likely has two starts remaining. He's gone 1-6 with a 5.72 ERA in his last 10 starts (50 1/3 innings) compared to 4-2 with a 3.18 ERA in his first 10 starts.
