Mets | Carlos Torres to bullpen

Tue, 17 Sep 2013 12:42:39 -0700

New York Mets P Carlos Torres will move to the bullpen for a few days as the team goes with a modified six-man starting rotation. SP Zack Wheeler is currently at 163 2/3 innings on the year entering his start Tuesday, Sept. 17, meaning he'll likely only have one more start. Torres will return to the rotation Sunday, Sept. 22.

Mets | Daisuke Matsuzaka signs

Thu, 22 Aug 2013 11:47:25 -0700

The New York Mets signed free-agent SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (Indians) to an undisclosed deal Thursday, Aug. 22. Matsuzaka could enter the rotation and take the spot of SP Carlos Torres. The team is trying to limit the innings of SPs Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler down the stretch.

Fantasy Tip: Matsuzaka might need a few minor league tune-ups before jumping into the Mets' rotation. Consider him only if you're desperate in NL-only universes. That's if he even gets called up.

Mets | Carlos Torres to stay in rotation

Tue, 20 Aug 2013 16:45:57 -0700

New York Mets SP Carlos Torres will stay in the rotation and start against the Detroit Tigers Friday, Aug. 23. SP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) will have surgery in the next seven to 10 days to remove bone spurs in his right elbow and is likely to miss the rest of the year. Torres is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 22 games this year, but he went 1-1 with a 6.43 ERA in his three starts.

Fantasy Tip: Torres gains some value based on the fact that he'll be in the rotation for a while, but nothing will be guaranteed once rosters expand in September. He's purely fodder for NL-only leagues.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia has bone spurs

Mon, 19 Aug 2013 12:55:31 -0700

New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) is dealing with bone spurs in his right elbow and might need surgery after the season. Manager Terry Collins thinks Mejia will soon have surgery, ending his season. "I can't say I know for sure, but it certainly doesn't look very good," Collins said about Mejia pitching again this season. Mejia wasn't at any harm by pitching through the pain in his elbow.

SP Carlos Torres could be asked to start against the Detroit Tigers Friday, Aug. 23, in Mejia's spot. Another option would be for Mejia's turn to be skipped and SP Matt Harvey to go on Friday. The team prefers to give SP Zack Wheeler an extra day of rest to preserve his innings, though. Collins said that September call-ups would likely be plugged into the rotation instead of Torres. SPs Rafael Montero, Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom are unlikely to be among that group, however, because they are facing innings limits.

Fantasy Tip: Torres may be a short-term NL-only option but nothing else. Any minor league pitcher that is tasked to fill out the rotation in the season's final month likely won't be fantasy-relevant, either.

Mets | Carlos Torres to start Saturday

Wed, 10 Jul 2013 10:11:34 -0700

New York Mets P Carlos Torres will start on Saturday, July 13, in place of SP Matt Harvey.

Fantasy Tip: Torres is just making a spot start to give Harvey a break and isn't worth fantasy consideration, despite his solid numbers in relief this season.

Mets | Looking to limit Matt Harvey

Tue, 09 Jul 2013 17:02:47 -0700

The New York Mets are looking to limit SP Matt Harvey's (finger) innings limit this year without shutting him down for the season. Harvey's blister on his finger looked much better Tuesday, July 9, but there's still a chance that the team uses SP Carlos Torres in his place against the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, July 13, in his place. The team will not use a six-man rotation once SP Jonathon Niese (shoulder) returns from the disabled list. Harvey could be shut down at around 220 innings this year.

Fantasy Tip: Right now might be the best time to sell high on Harvey while you still can in redraft leagues before the Mets start limiting his innings in the second half.

Mets | Carlos Torres likely to enter rotation

Tue, 09 Jul 2013 15:38:38 -0700

New York Mets SP Carlos Torres is likely to replace SP Shaun Marcum (hand) in the starting rotation until SP Jonathon Niese (shoulder) returns from the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable for Niese to return, so Torres could be in the rotation for a while, assuming he pitches effectively enough. However, he's still probably only worth looking at in NL-only universes.
