The Colorado Rockies placed INF Jonathan Herrera (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, May 23, with a strained right hamstring. 3B DJ LeMahieu was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move.

The Colorado Rockies have agreed to terms with Ps Rex Brothers, Edwar Cabrera, Jhoulys Chacin, Tyler Chatwood, Edgmer Escalona, Christian Friedrich, Guillermo Moscoso, Juan Nicasio, Josh Outman, Drew Pomeranz, Zach Putnam, Matt Reynolds, Josh Roenicke and Esmil Rogers, C Wilin Rosario, INFs Thomas Field, Hector Gomez, Jonathan Herrera, DJ LeMahieu, Chris Nelson and Jordan Pacheco and OFs Charlie Blackmon, Tyler Colvin, Jamie Hoffmann and Eric Young Jr. on one-year contracts.

Rockies | Chris Nelson has plenty of competition

Colorado Rockies 2B Chris Nelson will be competing with 2B Jonathan Herrera, 3B Brendan Harris, 3B Brandon Wood, 3B DJ LeMahieu, 2B Eric Young Jr. and 3B Jordan Pacheco in spring training for a spot as a utility infielder this year behind 2B Marco Scutaro.

Manager Jim Tracy pointed out that Nelson's back hip was drifting into pitches last year, which made it tough for him to get inside the inside pitches and keep from being jammed. "I got exposed a little bit last year with fastballs in, with me coming up trying to take everything to right field," Nelson said. "Guys are a little smarter and they saw that. They started jamming me, coming in more. This offseason, I just worked on the inside pitch while still staying consistent away."

Rockies | Could pursue 2B

The Colorado Rockies could be in a position to pursue a second baseman. They have pursued Atlanta Braves 2B Martin Prado and are also interested in Boston Red Sox SS Marco Scutaro and New York Mets 2B Justin Turner. If the season started today, INFs DJ LeMahieu or Chris Nelson would be the starter.

Colorado Rockies 2B Chris Nelson has shown some potential at third base in the past, but he is expected to compete with INF DJ LeMahieu for the starting second baseman job in spring training. 2B Jonathan Herrera is also expected to be in the mix at second.

Rockies | DJ LeMahieu looks forward to chance at 2B

Colorado Rockies INF DJ LeMahieu is eager to fill the vacancy at second base. He lives just 10 minutes from the team's spring training facility in Scottsdale, Ariz. "I will be standing right there," LeMahieu said. "To hear that a team really wants you is exciting. Colorado is a great place to play and hit." The team is still searching for infield help and a right-handed bat.

Rockies | DJ LeMahieu to be used at second and third

The Colorado Rockies plan to use IF DJ LeMahieu at both second base and third base when he is in the lineup. LeMahieu was acquired in the trade that sent 3B Ian Stewart to the Chicago Cubs.
