Angels | Garrett Richards pitching Saturday

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 16:03:08 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) will pitch a minor league game Saturday, March 28.

Fantasy Tip: The only significance of starting a minor league game is it means Richards won't start against any major league hitters until he is recalled. He is expected to return sometime in late April, and has progresses nicely from a serious knee injury. He posted high-end numbers last season before the injury and is a solid target in the middle rounds of drafts. His upside has the potential to be a huge boost to your fake rotation, and he'll likely only miss a handful of starts.

Angels | Halos being cautious with Garrett Richards

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:43:44 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) will likely be treated with extra caution by the Angels, and he might not return until late April.

Fantasy Tip: Richards has shown excellent progress this spring after a gruesome knee injury in 2014. Before his injury last season, he was performing at Cy Young levels. There isn't any reason to believe he won't return to a similar level in 2015, but he'll first miss a handful of starts. Richards' potential outweighs any risk of re-injury, and he's a nice candidate for your rotation in the middle rounds of drafts.

Angels | Garrett Richards has impressive outing

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 14:48:41 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) threw four hitless innings in a minor league game Monday, March 23, walking two and striking out three in 53 pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Richards hasn't had any setbacks at all this spring, and he's looked impressive. Even though he isn't likely to make his regular season debut until mid-April, his draft stock should be rising. Consider taking him to bolster your fake staff in the middle rounds of mixed league drafts.

Angels | Garrett Richards sharp in intrasquad

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 15:25:51 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) allowed just one hit and struck out four in three scoreless innings of work in an intrasquad Wednesday, March 18, and he called it a "big stepping stone in the process of getting back to where I want to be." He threw 31 of his 44 pitches for strikes, and his slider and curve ball looked very sharp. The next step for Richards will be to throw in a minor league game Monday, March 23. He's expected to return to the rotation in mid-April. Richards said his knee has been feeling great. Manager Mike Scioscia said Richards' arm is "where it should be," and the bigger concern is how he will field his position.

Fantasy Tip: Richards hasn't had any setbacks in his return from knee surgery this spring, and with each successful outing, he may slightly rise on fantasy baseball draft boards. Before suffering his injury in 2014, Richards was headed toward a Cy Young season. He could easily return to a similar level this year, making him a potential steal in the middle rounds.

Angels | Garrett Richards timetable

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 12:22:43 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) will throw live batting practice Friday, March 13. He is expected to throw a simulated game Wednesday, March 18, and the earliest he could pitch in a Cactus League game would be Monday, March 23.

Fantasy Tip: Barring any setbacks, Richards is eyeing a mid-April return, and he warrants attention in the middle rounds of drafts. He was pitching at high level last season and sported a 2.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 with 13 wins through 168 2/3 innings before suffering the season-ending knee injury. Continue to check back for updates on Richards' recovery, but so far, so good on that front.

Angels | Garrett Richards closer to game action

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 15:26:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) threw to hitters during a two-inning, 40-pitch simulated game Tuesday, March 10, and it's the last big step before he pitches in a spring game. He also went through fielding drills at near full speed Monday, March 9, and he'll throw a bullpen later this week. "I'm sure that will be the next progression," pitching coach Mike Butcher said. "The ball is coming out of his hand really well, with good life. He's maintained his delivery throughout the whole process and he's sticking his landing. There's nothing guarded. That's the biggest thing I'm looking for." Richards isn't expected to return until mid-April, though, at the earliest.

Fantasy Tip: Richards has looked very good so far this spring, but he's yet to pitch in any Cactus League games. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks with his knee in game action, there's reason to believe that he should bounce back nicely after suffering an ugly knee injury last year. Before the injury, Richards was firmly in the running for the AL Cy Young award. He's a solid fantasy baseball target in the middle rounds, and he could be the X-factor for your rotation in 2015.

Angels | Garrett Richards to throw another 'pen

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 09:41:56 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) will throw his sixth bullpen session of the spring Wednesday, March 4, and manager Mike Scioscia said Richards will simulate coming off the mound to cover first base for the first time.

Fantasy Tip: This is a big step for Richards, since it was him covering first base in Boston last year when he blew his knee out. From all reports this spring, Richards has looked great, but he still won't be ready for the start of the regular season, as the Halos are being cautious with him. Regardless, Richards was lights out last year before being injured, and he's a fine selection in the middle rounds of fantasy baseball drafts to solidify your starting rotation.

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) is expected to be ready to debut two or three weeks into the 2015 season.

Fantasy Tip: Richards is a solid SP3 candidate if he doesn't suffer any setbacks.

Angels | Garrett Richards to throw Sunday

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 09:03:24 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Sunday, March 1.

Fantasy Tip: Richards probably will miss the first few weeks of the season but should be available for the majority of the season. Owners should monitor his situation during the spring to make sure he is on schedule. Richards could be an option in the middle rounds of mixed league drafts if he does not suffer any setbacks.

Angels | Garrett Richards throws off mound

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 12:20:22 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (knee) threw 50 pitches, including offspeed pitches, from the stretch and windup Thursday, Feb. 26, which marked a big step for him. He will repeat the process Sunday, March 1.

Fantasy Tip: Richards continues to be adamant that he'll be ready to go for opening day, but the Angels are likely to play it cautious with him to start the season. Richards appears to be making great progress this spring, though, so there's a chance he could make his debut in mid-April if he avoids a setback. Given the strides made before being injured last year, Richards seems like a fine late middle-rounds gamble.
