Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards will pitch in a minor league game Tuesday, March 18, to stay on his once-every-five-days schedule, since the team has an open date on the Cactus League spring schedule.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said that the team could open the year with eight relief pitchers, signaling the fact that he's not confident that a youth-filled rotation will be able to go deep into games early on. SPs Garrett Richards, Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs haven't thrown more than 158 innings in any of the past three years. RP Joe Blanton would benefit from such a move, since he'd likely be released if he doesn't make the team.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Garrett Richards and Hector Santiago are virtual locks for the starting rotation this year, but SP Tyler Skaggs will have to prove he's worthy of a spot this spring. If not, the Halos will look to SPs Joe Blanton or Mark Mulder as a stopgap until he's ready. "But our season doesn't hinge on whether or not Tyler Skaggs is able to make the staff out of Spring Training and become a star on a dime," general manager Jerry Dipoto added. "We're going to give him the proper time to adjust."

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitching coach Mike Butcher said Wednesday, Sept. 11, that SP Garrett Richards has found consistency and he also has a much better grasp of the process of being a starting pitcher. "It's the whole maturation process, really," Butcher said. "I think he's kind of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It's been small increments of building a foundation and watching it grow. I think he's buying into the fact that the little adjustments that he's going to make are going to end up in big results."

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jason Vargas (armpit) will come off the disabled list and start against the New York Yankees Tuesday, Aug. 13. It's unclear who will be bumped out of the rotation as a result.
Fantasy Tip: Garrett Richards or Jerome Williams would make the most sense to be bumped out to make room for Vargas.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards will enter the rotation with SP Joe Blanton being moved to the bullpen. Richards will make the start against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, July 27. Blanton has 13 losses and an ERA of 5.66 in 20 starts this year, and he leads the majors in hits allowed (157) and homers allowed (24).
Fantasy Tip: Richards deserves to be owned in all AL-only leagues and deep enough mixed leagues if you're looking for a pitching spark. How long he'll remain in the rotation is unknown, though, with Jason Vargas (armpit) working his way back. If Richards pitches well enough, though, it might be hard for the Halos to banish him back to the bullpen.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Tommy Hanson (forearm) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. The Angels have recalled P Michael Roth from Double-A Arkansas to take Hanson's place on the roster.
Fantasy Tip: Hanson just isn't going to carry mixed-league value this year, if ever again. It seems like he's going to need to make some major changes in order to stay healthy and adapt pitching-wise to whatever it is that allows him to remain that way. Mixed leaguers shouldn't feel compelled to keep him around. Roth has posted a 3.61 ERA in 10 games (eight starts) for the Travelers but is probably going to fill in as a reliever for now. Jerome Williams should stick in the rotation and may still be of use in AL-only leagues, and Garrett Richards seems like a decent bet to move into the rotation and would be worth monitoring in those formats.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Tommy Hanson (forearm) was scratched from his start with tightness in his right forearm Wednesday, June 26. P Billy Buckner will start in his place against the Detroit Tigers.
Fantasy Tip: More injury concerns for Hanson. Sigh. Depending on the severity of his injury, Garrett Richards could be pressed into starting duty. Buckner is just being used as an emergency starter.
