Angels | Garrett Richards won't wait around

Wed, 18 May 2016 17:04:56 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) said he's not going to linger with his current stem cell treatment. It sounds like he will have Tommy John surgery in six to eight weeks if it doesn't work.

Fantasy Tip: That would basically ensure Richards misses all of 2017, which is a shame, as the 27-year-old had really come into his own over the past couple of seasons. It's also another blow to the Angels' pitching staff, which is also without Andrew Heaney and C.J. Wilson for an extended period. Youngster Nick Tropeano is probably the best bet to step up and provide the most value for fantasy owners in their absence.

Angels | Garrett Richards update

Tue, 17 May 2016 09:08:52 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) received a stem-cell injection Monday, May 16, and manager Mike Scioscia said there's no timetable for Richards' return. Richards is trying to avoid Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, but it'll be weeks before he knows if the injection was successful. Scioscia said Richards could be out the rest of this year and possibly all of next if he needs surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Oftentimes these injections to put off Tommy John surgery don't work, so Richards could be facing a long recovery if he requires surgery. Most of his owners likely already dropped him. In deeper leagues, you may want to stash him away if you have room in case he does return to pitcher later this season. But the odds are we don't see Richards until sometime next year. Even if he does come back in 2016, there's no guarantee he'll be very effective.

Angels | Garrett Richards trying to avoid surgery

Mon, 16 May 2016 16:19:49 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) will not undergo Tommy John surgery and will instead receive something similar to a platelet-rich plasma injection Monday, May 16. He will be shut down for six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Well, this is a bit of a surprise. There's no guarantee that Richards will avoid potential Tommy John surgery down the road with rest and rehab, so he may wind up missing all of the 2017 season if the rehab doesn't work. There's a slim chance he could pitch later this season, but it's highly unlikely. Don't expect to realistically be able to use Richards in fantasy leagues until the second half of next season.

Angels | Garrett Richards seeking other opinions

Tue, 10 May 2016 17:08:43 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) is seeking other opinions on his arm before committing to Tommy John surgery. Dr. David Altchek is reviewing Richards' MRI next.

Fantasy Tip: It's likely inevitable that Richards will need elbow reconstruction, which will keep him out the rest of this year and some of next. Most owners have probably already dropped Richards in redraft leagues. You may want to hold off in the deepest of leagues, but you're probably delaying the inevitable.

Angels | Garrett Richards placed on DL

Fri, 06 May 2016 16:53:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: Richards is seeking a second opinion on his torn ulnar collateral ligament, but he's expected to need Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him the rest of this year and part of next. He could choose to rehab, but even then he'd likely miss most of the rest of the year. It's probably safe to jettison him to the waiver wire and search for another starter to replace him.

Angels | Garrett Richards seeking another opinion

Fri, 06 May 2016 15:42:19 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) will seek a second medical opinion before making a decision on whether he will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners should be preparing to be without Richards. At best, he attempts to rehab through the injury and misses a significant chunk of the season. However, rarely do pitchers not opt for Tommy John surgery when they have a torn ulnar collateral ligament. In deep formats, Matt Shoemaker is a speculative grab, as he'll likely see some starts going forward, and Tyler Skaggs will enter the rotation at some point, too. Stay tuned for a final word on Richards and the moving pieces within the Los Angeles rotation.

Angels | Garrett Richards needs Tommy John surgery

Fri, 06 May 2016 07:40:59 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery, according to a source. The tear was found Thursday, May 5, after he was scratched from his upcoming start due to what was cited as dehydration. He's expected to miss the rest of this season and part of next season.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Shoemaker and Tyler Skaggs could both come up because the team has two open rotation spots now. Another option is lefty Nate Smith, who is 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and he has fanned 31 in 35 2/3 innings at Class AAA Salt Lake. Skaggs, a perennial high-end prospect the last few years, has the most upside. Shoemaker was brilliant two seasons ago with a 16-4 record and a 3.04 ERA, but he hasn't been the same pitcher since 2014. He's still worth the spin in AL-only formats. Smith isn't on the 40-man roster, so he's more of a dark horse option in deep formats. If you own Richards, remember this isn't official yet. However, with your waivers likely to run this weekend, you have to gauge how much you could expect from Richards should he opt to rehab it instead of surgery. He would at least be out until around the All-Star break with no guarantee he would avoid surgery. Unless something promising comes out by the time your waivers run, cut bait.

Angels | Garrett Richards won't make Friday start

Thu, 05 May 2016 15:10:39 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (dehydration) has been scratched from his scheduled start against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, May 6. RP Cory Rasmus will receive the start.

Fantasy Tip: It's a bummer for Richards and his fantasy owners in what was a plus matchup. Keep an eye on how he progresses from his illness and be ready to plug him back in if he can make a start next week. Rasmus is a reliever and should be avoided everywhere. All Tampa hitters will be attractive in daily formats Friday night.

Angels | Garrett Richards taking it day-to-day

Wed, 04 May 2016 17:06:59 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (dehydration) said he is still fatigued and does not feel "crisp." He and the organization are taking a day-by-day approach to his scheduled start against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, May 6.

"I'm just trying to take it day by day," Richards said. "Stay on top of it, stay hydrated, try to bounce back. Everything just kind of doesn't feel crisp right now. We're going to re-evaluate tomorrow and go from there."

Fantasy Tip: It would be wise to prepare to be without Richards Friday, and he should be viewed as a risky start if he's able to take the hill, especially in daily contests. Richards has been excellent to start the season with a 2.34 ERA and 8.8 K/9, so expect the wins to begin piling up once he's returned to full health.

Angels | Garrett Richards dealing with dehydration

Wed, 04 May 2016 09:50:06 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (dehydration) left his last start early due to dehydration, and it's not a sure thing that he'll make his next start against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, May 6. Richards skipped his normal bullpen session between his starts as a precaution. The Angels will evaluate him after he throws on flat ground. Richards hasn't seen any doctors or taken any MRI exams. Los Angeles would most likely use the bullpen if Richards can't start Friday. SP Matt Shoemaker, who was sent to the minors, is unlikely to be an option.

Fantasy Tip: Despite being 1-3, Richards has pitched well with a 2.34 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Because of his condition this week, you'll want to be extremely cautious in deploying him if he pitches against the Rays later this week.
