Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (leg, knee) suffered an apparent left knee or leg injury while covering first base in the bottom of the second inning against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday, Aug. 20. He was down for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher.
Fantasy Tip: It certainly looked serious, and looked similar to the injury Tim Hudson suffered a couple of years ago when he was a member of the Atlanta Braves. Fantasy owners hold your breath that this is not a season-ending injury, and everyone keep your fingers crossed for Richards' well-being.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards won't be shut down after a specific innings limit. "Not at all," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said Monday. "Garrett has thrown from end to end in a season. His innings have not escalated to the point where they're 200-plus, but Garrett throws the ball as easily as anybody you'll ever see. It's not a violent delivery, it's not a violent package. He maintains velocity pretty easily."
Fantasy Tip: This is good news for his owners as he remains a valuable starter for the rest of the season, but beware that he may tire physically along with experiencing a somewhat negative statistical correction.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim manager Mike Scioscia said that the team could open the year with eight relief pitchers, signaling the fact that he's not confident that a youth-filled rotation will be able to go deep into games early on. SPs Garrett Richards, Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs haven't thrown more than 158 innings in any of the past three years. RP Joe Blanton would benefit from such a move, since he'd likely be released if he doesn't make the team.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Garrett Richards and Hector Santiago are virtual locks for the starting rotation this year, but SP Tyler Skaggs will have to prove he's worthy of a spot this spring. If not, the Halos will look to SPs Joe Blanton or Mark Mulder as a stopgap until he's ready. "But our season doesn't hinge on whether or not Tyler Skaggs is able to make the staff out of Spring Training and become a star on a dime," general manager Jerry Dipoto added. "We're going to give him the proper time to adjust."

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitching coach Mike Butcher said Wednesday, Sept. 11, that SP Garrett Richards has found consistency and he also has a much better grasp of the process of being a starting pitcher. "It's the whole maturation process, really," Butcher said. "I think he's kind of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It's been small increments of building a foundation and watching it grow. I think he's buying into the fact that the little adjustments that he's going to make are going to end up in big results."
