Indians | Jason Kipnis returns

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:59:38 -0700

Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (back) returned to the lineup Thursday, March 26, after he missed the previous seven games with a back issue.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to check back for updates on Kipnis ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) leading up to opening day. He is an intriguing fantasy commodity with five-category upside and plays a position which lacks high-end talent. Still, the injuries have followed Kipnis around over the past season, so health is a concern. Prior to the back spasms, Kipnis was a popular bounce-back candidate, and as long as there are no lingering back issues, he remains an upside pick in the middle rounds. Take a wait-and-see approach in FantasyScore contests, as Kipnis' price is steep.

Indians | Jason Kipnis might play Thursday

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 20:06:51 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (back) might return to Cactus League spring game action as soon as Thursday, March 26. "The plan is, if he feels good, we'll play him tomorrow. But, you want to kind of reserve the right to (change your mind), if he needs a day. But I think all signs are pointing that he was moving around pretty good," manager Terry Francona said Wednesday, March 25.

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Kipnis appears to be at the tail end of this thing. While back injuries can be tricky, hopefully it isn't something that pops back up when the games start counting for real. He will be a top fantasy option at his position thanks to his power.

Indians | Jason Kipnis plays in minors game

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 15:28:58 -0700

Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (back) took at-bats in a minor league game Wednesday, March 25, and manager Terry Francona is optimistic that Kipnis will be able to play in a spring game soon. Kipnis has missed the last seven games due to mid-back spasms. "I think he turned a corner," Francona said. "Now, we don't want to overdo it. Sometimes you try to play catch-up and that doesn't make a lot of sense. But a day like today was good for him. He can get a lot of at-bats without having to stand out there for four hours, which is really good."

Fantasy Tip: Kipnis should be ready to go for opening day unless he suffers a setback in the remaining spring games. He should be as good of a second base option at FantasyScore as any for $5,900 (11.8% of cap) in the opening week.

Indians | Jason Kipnis aiming for Wednesday

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 16:01:27 -0700

Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (back) took 50 swings Tuesday, March 24, and the plan is to have him play in a minor league game Wednesday, March 25, according to manager Tony Francona.

Fantasy Tip: Kipnis was a potential bounce-back candidate, after he dealt with a slew of injuries last season. Now, he is already dealing with back spasms which has the potential to be a lingering issue. It might be wise to resist the urge to reach for Kipnis in drafts. However, there is always the point where the upside far outweighs the risk. Kipnis has the potential to post a five-category return at a position which lacks high-end talent.

Indians | Jason Kipnis misses another game

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 18:58:07 -0700

Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (back) missed his fifth straight Cactus League spring game Monday, March 23, due to a back issue. Manager Terry Francona said Kipnis is doing exercises indoors, but he has yet to be cleared to resume baseball activities.

Fantasy Tip: It's unlikely Kipnis will miss time into the regular season due to this injury, but a back injury is trick and is easy to aggravate. Fantasy owners will want plenty of depth at 2B/MI if they plan to draft the Cleveland second baseman.

Indians | Jason Kipnis scratched with back spasms

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 16:49:07 -0700

Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (back) was a late scratch Thursday, March 19, due to back spasms.

Fantasy Tip: Another nagging injury is the last thing Kipnis' fantasy stock needs, as he has already dealt with oblique, hamstring and finger issues over the past 12 months. Check back for an official update on the severity of the injury and a timeline for his return. While there is plenty of time before the season starts, it may be worth resisting the urge to reach for Kipnis in the early middle rounds on draft day. Back issues can creep up and resurface.

Indians | Leaner Jason Kipnis aiming to bounce back

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 06:53:46 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Indians 2B Jason Kipnis bulked up before last season to add more power, but his swing appeared longer and slower, which could have led to his down season in 2014. Kipnis reported to camp leaner this season, and manager Terry Francona has instructed Kipnis to return to his natural swing and focus to hitting to all fields.

Fantasy Tip: Kipnis still carries a lot of name value, which likely will keep him from falling too far in traditional drafts. However, he's a clear bounce-back candidate for 2015. Look for him after the first handful of second basemen are off the board in the early middle rounds.
