Pirates | Francisco Liriano starting Sunday

Wed, 09 Jul 2014 14:37:05 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (oblique) will start Sunday, July 13, against the Cincinnati Reds. SP Vance Worley will work out of the bullpen Saturday, July 12, and Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano is the epitome of high-risk, high-reward. He is worth adding in all formats if you're looking for pitching. Worley's value obviously suffers, but with Gerrit Cole also injured, Worley could be worth holding in NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole will push someone out of rotation

Thu, 26 Jun 2014 14:50:39 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole's (shoulder) return Saturday, June 28, will push someone out of the starting rotation, but manager Clint Hurdle has not disclosed any information. Two candidates for demotions are SPs Jeff Locke and Brandon Cumpton, because they have minor league options remaining, while SP Vance Worley does not. Pirates SP Edinson Volquez was scheduled to pitch Saturday, June 28, on normal rest but is being skipped in favor of Cole.

Fantasy Tip: Check back for updates, because anyone starting for the Pirates has value to NL-only owners. Locke, Cumpton and Worley have all pitched well of late and are potential options in mixed leagues, at least, in favorable matchups. Volquez's inconsistency is frustrating, but it would be a bold move for Hurdle to remove him from the starting rotation.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Vance Worley is an option to be called up to start against the Miami Marlins Sunday, June 15. Twins | Samuel Deduno has early edge for No. 5?

Mon, 10 Mar 2014 17:23:53 -0700

Minnesota Twins SPs Samuel Deduno, Vance Worley, Scott Diamond and Kyle Gibson are competing for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, and assistant GM Rob Antony has said he doesn't believe there's a clear-cut front-runner. Deduno, Worley and Diamond don't have options remaining.

MLB.com reporter Rhett Bolinger believes Deduno appears to be the slight favorite because of his success in 2013 (3.83 ERA, 67 strikeouts and 41 walks in 108 innings). He appears to be healthy after having gone arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last September, too. Manager Ron Gardenhire indicated that he'd like Deduno to make the club one way or another following the right-hander's three scoreless innings on Sunday, March 9. "He's filthy," Gardenhire remarked.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever wins this job is unlikely to have relevance in mixed leagues, but all of them have either produced the results or boasted the promise, or both, to be useful in them. Deduno and Gibson fit the bill most, but it's mostly AL-only managers who should be following them.

Twins | No front-runner for final rotation spot

Mon, 10 Mar 2014 15:01:39 -0700

There appears to be no clear-cut front-runner for the Minnesota Twins' final rotation spot between SPs Samuel Deduno, Vance Worley, Scott Diamond and Kyle Gibson, but Deduno may be the slight favorite because of his success last year. Deduno has looked healthy this spring after having arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder last September. Manager Ron Gardenhire indicated he'd like Deduno on the roster as either a starter or reliever this year. Worley is also healthy after having shoulder problems last year, and he's roughly 25 pounds lighter than 2013. Gibson might be on the outside looking in at the end of camp, because he still has minor league options left.
