Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort said RP LaTroy Hawkins isn't necessarily the "everyday" closer this season. RP Rex Brothers could be used if a group of lefties is due up in the ninth inning in a save situation.
Fantasy Tip: This gives credence to the fact that Brothers is likely the better saves option over the full season than Hawkins. Hawkins should enter the year receiving more save chances, but that could change easily, and Hawkins has said in the past that he prefers pitching the eighth inning.

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will compete with RP Rex Brothers for the closer's role in spring training next year. Hawkins went 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA and 13 saves for the New York Mets in 2013.
Fantasy Tip: Brothers performed well in his first taste of the ninth at the end of last season, and we fully expect him to win the job over Hawkins, who personally said he wasn't fond of closing out games last season with the Mets.

The Colorado Rockies are "moved on" from free-agent C Carlos Ruiz (Phillies) and are now focusing their efforts on finding a closer. RPs Rex Brothers and Chad Bettis are expected to fill setup roles.

The Colorado Rockies declined to pick up RP Rafael Betancourt's option for the 2014 season Tuesday, Oct. 29, making him a free agent.
Fantasy Tip: This signals the shift to Rex Brothers as the closer of the future. Brothers performed admirably with Betancourt injured this year and down the stretch. Look to him as a midrange closer option in 2014.

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) underwent an MRI Monday, Aug. 26, and expects "bad news," likely a torn ulnar collateral ligament. That would require Tommy John surgery and likely cost him at least the majority of the 2014 season. The 38-year-old said he's uncertain whether he'd come back following surgery.
Fantasy Tip: Colorado is all but guaranteed to reject their end of a $4.25 mutual option for 2014 if he goes under the knife, which would leave Rex Brothers in line to close next season.

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) may have torn his elbow ligament and will undergo an MRI exam Monday, Aug. 26. He will land on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Obviously this means the Rockies will not be trading Betancourt, who was put on revocable waivers this week. Rex Brothers has a good shot of finishing out the year as the club's closer. Hold onto Betancourt until we know the results of his MRI exam, but it doesn't look good.

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (elbow) left the team's game early Thursday, Aug. 22, because of an elbow injury. He likely will have to go on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: If Betancourt has to go on the disabled list, there is a chance he may not come back this season. Owners should hang onto him until they get a clear timetable. Rex Brothers likely will regain the closer role and should be picked up in leagues if he is available.

The Colorado Rockies have placed RP Rafael Betancourt on revocable waivers. He has a $4.25 million option for the 2014 season, and the team wants to bring him back, so they'll need a substantial offer in order to consider trading him.
Fantasy Tip: There's a decent chance the Rockies might move Betancourt since they have dropped out of contention and Rex Brothers is the closer of the future. Hang onto Betancourt in case he's dealt to a contending team that uses him as their closer.

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss is unsure if RP Rafael Betancourt (appendix) will return to the closing duties when he's completely healthy. Weiss could ease him back into the ninth, with RP Rex Brothers holding down the fort. A lot will depend on how Betancourt fares in his rehab game Thursday, Aug. 15, and how he feels. Betancourt is expected to be activated from the disabled list Saturday, Aug. 17. He's regained some strength after losing eight pounds following his appendectomy.
Fantasy Tip: Brothers is owned in all leagues, and it should stay that way. He's the closer of the future and could continue to be the man in the ninth for the rest of the season. Betancourt owners have to hold him and hope he pitches well enough to at least see a handful of save chances down the stretch.

Colorado Rockies RP Rafael Betancourt (appendectomy) isn't certain to return to the closer's role, according to manager Walt Weiss, who said there's a chance that he eases his former closer back into the role. The manager said that a lot will depend on how Betancourt does in his rehab game on Thursday, Aug. 15, and how the pitcher feels. The plan is to activate Betancourt on Saturday, Aug. 17. Betancourt has regained the strength he lost because he dropped 8 pounds after his appendectomy.
Fantasy Tip: Renck also prints that Rex Brothers, the closer of the future, wasn't a candidate to remain at closer the first time Betancourt returned from the disabled list because the team was in contention at the time. Fantasy owners shouldn't be quick to drop Betancourt, but the reliever is also trade bait, and Colorado is clearly ready to move on if they find a taker.
