Mets | Jenrry Mejia with clean bill of health

Mon, 31 Mar 2014 10:01:12 -0700

New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia (forearm) came away with a clean bill of health after visiting with a team doctor Sunday, March 30. He is expected to start against the Cincinnati Reds Friday, April 4, barring a setback.

Fantasy Tip: Health and command will determine how effective Mejia will be. He has electric stuff and should be owned in all NL-only leagues. Keep in mind that he hasn't gone over 95 innings in a season, so he will have his innings limited.

Mets | Daisuke Matsuzaka could pitch if Jon Niese isn't ready

Sun, 30 Mar 2014 12:24:25 -0700

If New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) is unable to make his scheduled start against the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, April 6, SP Daisuke Matsuzaka could be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to make the start.

Fantasy Tip: Matsuzaka pitched well during spring training, allowing nine runs (eight earned) and 25 hits over 23 1/3 innings in six starts, with four walks and 25 strikeouts. However, he lost the competition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation to Jenrry Mejia. That being said, he should be back in the majors sooner rather than later and could be worth a gamble in NL-only leagues.

Mets | Concerned with Jenrry Mejia

Thu, 27 Mar 2014 12:36:13 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins is concerned with the bunion that is bothering SP Jenrry Mejia (foot).

Fantasy Tip: All signs point to Daisuke Matsuzaka winning the No. 5 rotation job over Mejia, especially now. Mejia could use some more seasoning and work on his control. Dice-K is an option for those needing rotation depth in NL-only leagues.

Mets | Fifth starter competition still open

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 12:55:48 -0700

The New York Mets paid SP Daisuke Matsuzaka $100,000 Tuesday, March 25, for the right to send him to the minors if they choose, meaning the competition for the fifth starting spot is still on between him and SP Jenrry Mejia. Each pitcher will start once this weekend. "The competition is still open," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "It doesn't mean the competition is going to be determined exclusively on those two (Montreal) outings." Matsuzaka can demand his release if he's not on the major league roster by May 30.

Mets | Daisuke Matsuzaka has edge for final spot

Mon, 24 Mar 2014 15:41:12 -0700

New York Mets SP Daisuke Matsuzaka shut out the St. Louis Cardinals into the seventh inning in his spring outing Monday, March 24, and appears to be locked in as the team's No. 5 starter. The team must inform him if he's made the roster by noon Tuesday, March 25, or they must give him a $100,000 retention bonus to send him to the minors or release him. "It certainly gives him an edge, because he's done it before, and he's done it a lot. But certainly, with the way Jenrry threw yesterday, he's got to be in that mix," manager Terry Collins said. Matsuzaka has a 3.86 spring ERA in 18 2/3 innings, and SP Jenrry Mejia has a 2.89 ERA in 9 1/3 innings.
