New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, April 8. He'll miss the rest of the 2014 season.
Fantasy Tip: This leaves a giant vacuum in the Mets' SV picture, which is currently being filled by Jose Valverde. This gives him some more leeway, and he's looked decent lately. But for the rest of the season, he's a shaky bet. Others, including Jeurys Familia, Gonzalez Germen and Vic Black or someone not currently on the club could chime in. Valverde is best used as a third mixed closer. Be careful.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (elbow) is dealing with an incomplete tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow, and he'll need "complete rest" for two weeks.
Fantasy Tip: Parnell hasn't been able to stay healthy in his short time as the Mets' closer. Rubin suggests that Parnell will be out for an extended amount of time, since he won't be throwing at all for two weeks. It's likely we won't see Parnell back for at least a month and probably more. Jose Valverde, who impressed the club this spring, is expected to take over the ninth-inning duties. He should now be owned in all leagues. Vic Black (currently in the minors) and Jeurys Familia could also factor in down the road if Papa Grande falters.

The New York Mets signed free-agent RP Jose Valverde (Tigers) to a minor league contract.
Fantasy Tip: Valverde is a long shot to close many games for the Mets. He's basically an insurance policy in case Bobby Parnell isn't healthy from offseason neck surgery. Vic Black probably would assume the closer role if Parnell isn't ready for the start of the regular season, though.

New York Mets RP Bobby Parnell (neck) is around two weeks behind his normal schedule, but he still expects to be ready by Opening Day. He's throwing a ball on flat ground at 120 feet without any problems, and he's resumed lifting weight and running. "Everything is feeling great -- no pain with it or anything like that. So my confidence is getting better," he said. Parnell will pitch more in B games early this spring to allow the team to control the settings of games. The Mets are still looking to add a veteran pitcher with late-innings experience as a safety blanket. They watched free-agent RP Joel Hanrahan (Red Sox) throw last week and are interested in free-agent RP Ryan Madson (Angels), too.
Fantasy Tip: Vic Black is the in-house option to take over in the ninth to start the year if Parnell isn't ready.

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed RP Jason Grilli (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain Tuesday, July 23, and recalled P Victor Black in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: If you haven't done so already, pick up Mark Melancon if he's still out there on your league's waiver wire. There is a chance the Bucs search for a replacement fireman via trade, too, depending on how long Grilli is expected to be out.
