Red Sox | Joe Kelly turns heads Monday

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 16:04:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly impressed scouts with his pitching arsenal and ability to maintain high velocity late into the game Monday, Aug. 25. One scout said his secondary pitches were "plus-plus," while another noted the incredible transformation Kelly has made since he saw him in May.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) owns a 1.82 ERA with 20 punchouts through 24 2/3 innings over his past four starts, which were all wins. There have been flashes of this type of production at points in the past, so while you should remain a touch hesitant, time is running out to make an impact in seasonal leagues. Kelly is worth a speculative flier for owners looking for pitching help. At FantasyScore, Kelly could be worth a contrarian consideration for his next start against the New York Mets

Red Sox | Eduardo Rodriguez will have start skipped

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 15:58:30 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Eduardo Rodriguez will have his next start skipped. SPs Henry Owens, Joe Kelly and Wade Miley will start during the weekend series against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez ($5,700, 11.4% of cap) is pushing up against his innings limit, so look for the Red Sox to be cautious with him down the stretch. In most formats, he is nothing more than a streaming option and FantayScore start when landing in a plus-matchup, though. Check back for updates on when he'll make his next start. For the season, Rodriguez owns a 4.39 ERA, a 4.29 FIP and a 1.24 WHIP.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly hasn't been good

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 08:54:57 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly has given up at least four runs in each of his last four starts. He faces the Detroit Tigers Friday, Aug. 7.

Fantasy Tip: You definitely shouldn't trust Kelly ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) the way he's been pitching and against a Tigers team that can take advantage of him. Kelly has a 6.11 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 in 17 starts for Boston this year.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly shaky again

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 22:45:05 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly allowed five runs - four earned - over 3 1/3 innings in a no-decision Monday, July 27, against the Chicago White Sox, his second start since being demoted to the minors. "He had a rough outing. A lot of elevated pitches in the strike zone," manager John Farrell said. "They were strikes, but the command within the strike zone was lacking. A lot of hard contact early."

Fantasy Tip: Avoid Kelly ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) in FantasyScore until he starts to iron out his problems and start to pitch with a little more consistency and efficiency.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly will start Wednesday

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 15:14:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly will start Wednesday, July 21, against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly hasn't pitched in the majors since June 23, and with a 5.67 ERA on the season, he'll have quite a bit of work to do in order to come through on his prediction of winning the American League Cy Young award.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly won't go to bullpen

Sat, 11 Jul 2015 14:09:29 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly will not go to the bullpen, according to team sources, despite the relief crew already being taxed by the starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: The club believes in Kelly as a starter and so does general manager Ben Cherington, so the Red Sox believe he still has some starting mileage left in the tank. Stay away from Kelly when he does get called back up, at least until he establishes some value.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly sent down by BoSox

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 09:54:09 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly was optioned to Class AAA Pawtucket Thursday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) gave up five earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings in his last outing against the Baltimore Orioles, and he was sporting a 5.67 ERA in 14 starts (74 2/3 frames). You can now drop Kelly anywhere you were hanging onto him. Perhaps Justin Masterson ($3,800) is given another shot at a rotation spot now. Masterson hasn't pitched much better, though, and he'd only be attractive to those desperate for pitching help in AL leagues if he re-enters the rotation.

Red Sox | Justin Masterson to return soon?

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 15:40:01 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Justin Masterson (shoulder) will make his next rehab start for Class AAA Pawtucket Wednesday, June 10, and his minor league rehab assignment could come to an end after that if everything goes well. Manager John Farrell isn't setting a date for the return of Masterson, who has struggled in his previous rehab outings. However, he did discover something valuable late in his last start when he positioned his back foot in his delivery in a way that let him get more downward movement on the ball. SP Joe Kelly is the one in danger of losing his spot when Masterson is ready.

Fantasy Tip: The BoSox will have a tough decision to make between Masterson ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) and Kelly. But the one thing for sure is that youngster Eduardo Rodriguez ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future. He should now be owned in all leagues, and he could continue to help fantasy owners everywhere for much of the second half unless Boston plays it safe and limits his innings. Masterson and Kelly are strictly weaker matchup plays on FantasyScore.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly ends winless drought

Sat, 06 Jun 2015 19:21:30 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly picked up his first win since April 17, allowing one run on four hits in six innings while striking out six against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, June 6.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has delivered his share of duds this year, but he has actually been pitching well lately, allowing two runs or less in four of his last five starts. If Boston's offense can start to produce, Kelly could be worth taking a chance on as a low-priced starter at FantasyScore.

Red Sox | Eduardo Rodriguez coming up

Wed, 27 May 2015 10:43:53 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Eduardo Rodriguez will be called up from Class AAA Pawtucket to start against the Texas Rangers Thursday, May 28. He was 4-3 with a 2.98 ERA in eight starts in the minors and struck out 44 in 48 1/3 innings. Manager John Farrell said the team will go with a six-man rotation for a turn, with the plan to return Rodriguez to the minors. The other starters will all be pushed back a day. Farrell acknowledged that it may be hard to send Rodriguez back down if he pitches well tomorrow. SP Joe Kelly has struggled this year, has minor league options left and could pitch out of the bullpen if necessary. The Red Sox are also looking for an opportunity to call up SP Brian Johnson, who is 5-3 with a 2.92 ERA in nine starts for Pawtucket.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez should be picked up in all AL-only leagues, and he even warrants consideration in deep mixed formats if he stays in the rotation. However, starting him at FantasyScore tomorrow for a cheap price seems too risky. Joe Kelly ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) will probably need to turn in a fine performance in his next start to avoid being bumped from the rotation.
