Red Sox | Joe Kelly to pitch in minor-league game

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:00:58 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (biceps) will pitch in a minor-league game this week. This will allow for the Red Sox to start the season with Kelly on the disabled list with a backdated stint.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) boldly proclaimed he could win the American League Cy Young award this season, earlier this offseason. If he's going to do that, it appears as though he'll have to do so with less than a full slate of starts. Kelly piled up a record of 6-4 in 17 starts last season for the Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, with an xFIP of 4.19. Owners will need to see a lengthy string of quality starts before they give a roster spot to Kelly this season.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly battles biceps soreness

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:30:57 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (biceps) is working through soreness in his biceps. Manager John Farrell said Kelly is feeling better but may have his next turn in the spring rotation pushed back.

Fantasy Tip: Farrell said he'd hoped to have Kelly throw 175-180 innings in the regular season, and that could still happen if Kelly doesn't have injuries like this act up. Kelly should be considered in later rounds of deeper leagues only.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly beats former team in debut

Wed, 06 Aug 2014 22:47:26 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly made his team debut Wednesday, Aug. 6, in a start against his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals. He is the first pitcher to go seven-plus innings and allow three or fewer hits in his Red Sox debut since former SP Hideo Nomo's no-hitter April 4, 2001. He allowed one run, three hits and four walks over seven innings with two strikeouts in the no-decision and quality start.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly will be a hot property off the waiver wire in AL-only fantasy leagues, if he wasn't already. He has the potential to be a solid fantasy option, and perhaps a change of scenery was all he needed to live up to his potential.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly likely to start next week

Fri, 01 Aug 2014 15:15:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly is likely to make his debut for the team next week against his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: Crazy timing that'll be, huh. Anway, with the move to the American League East, Kelly's value should drop a bit, but it's not like he was on the rosters of many to begin with. We feel that Kelly should only be owned in AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | Acquire Allen Craig, Joe Kelly

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 09:41:57 -0700

The Boston Red Sox acquired OF Allen Craig and SP Joe Kelly from the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday, July 31, in exchange for SP John Lackey.

Fantasy Tip: Well then. Craig has been a former shell of himself this year, but the move to Boston could spark a turnaround in a more hitter-friendly environment. He'll also see more consistent playing time in Beantown. Kelly hasn't excited since his return from the DL, and he won't be any more intriguing with the move to the AL East.

Back in St. Louis, the departure of Craig opens up everyday PT for Oscar Taveras. Everyday at-bats should be good for the youngster, and it could elevate his play to levels that we've expected of him. He should be owned everywhere now.

Cardinals | Rotation set for Dodgers series

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 12:28:56 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SPs Joe Kelly and Carlos Martinez will pitch Saturday, July 19, and Sunday, July 20, respectively, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. As previously reported, Lance Lynn will open the series Friday, July 18.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly and Martinez are risky road starts against a strong and rested Dodgers lineup. However, both are solid low-end pitching options with upside in all formats for the second half.
