The Boston Red Sox have recalled P Joe Kelly from Class AAA Pawtucket. In a corresponding move, RP Heath Hembree has been optioned to Pawtucket.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly went 2-0 with an 8.46 ERA in six starts earlier this season before being demoted but will serve as a reliever this time around, severely limiting any fantasy value he had left. Kelly tossed five scoreless innings of relief for Pawtucket over four outings, with one walk and nine strikeouts. Hembree posted a 2.41 ERA in 37 1/3 innings but had struggled mightily in his last three games and had allowed left-handed batters to hit .402 against him this year, with right-handed batters hitting just .198.

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (groin) will continue his minor league rehab with Class A Lowell Friday, July 8, and Monday, July 11.
Fantasy Tip: This news perhaps indicates Kelly is getting closer to his return to the Red Sox but regardless, his value in all fantasy leagues has been pretty much shot since it was announced he'd be converting to a reliever. As a result, owners can simply look past him for now.

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (groin) is still throwing from flat ground, and until he throws with "intensity" from 180 feet, he will not pitch from the mound, according to manager John Farrell.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly was demoted to the minors after posting a 8.46 ERA and 2.24 WHIP through six starts with Boston. He shouldn't be owned as anything more than a desperation stash in cavernous mixed and AL-only setups, especially since he currently isn't even pitching.

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (groin) has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 groin strain and he'll miss at least one start for Class AAA.
Fantasy Tip: It just keeps getting worse for Kelly, who struggled mightily at the major league level with a 8.46 ERA and 2.24 WHIP in six starts before getting sent down. Even when he does make it back to the Red Sox, he'll have a long way to go until he can be trusted again in most fantasy formats.

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly will be used as a starter at Class AAA Pawtucket instead of a reliever.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly was demoted last night after another rough start. He's now sporting an 8.46 ERA, 2.23 WHIP and 7.7 walks per nine innings. Those are atrocious numbers, even considering he was fanning 10.9 hitters per nine. Boston will hope he fix his issues on the farm, but it might be an uphill battle for him to reclaim a rotation gig this year. He's virtually useless in fantasy right now.

The Boston Red Sox optioned SP Joe Kelly to Class AAA Pawtucket Wednesday, July 1. The team did not announce a decision how they plan to fill the void in the vacancy in the rotation.
Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain if the team will give Sean O'Sullivan or Henry Owens another try, or if someone else is going to be promoted for a shot. Either way, Kelly can be safely dropped in all fantasy formats.

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly allowed five earned runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out eight over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, May 27.
Fantasy Tip: Consistency has always been an issue for Kelly, and he should be reserved for friendly matchups in daily formats.
Sat, 21 May 2016 16:47:04 -0700
Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly lost a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning Saturday, May 21. He allowed one hit and three walks while fanning seven in 6 2/3 innings in his win over the Cleveland Indians.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly will have spurts of brilliance, but consistency is what ails him. He remains a matchup play in DFS.
