Red Sox | Joe Kelly throws from distance

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 21:34:35 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly threw from 120 feet Wednesday, April 27, as he makes his way back from a right shoulder impingement.

Fantasy Tip: Avoid using Kelly in fantasy leagues and DFS play until he can officially return from the 15-day disabled list and prove his health in at least one full start without any setbacks.

Red Sox | No reutrn timetable for Joe Kelly

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 15:16:11 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) currently has no return timeline, but he did not suffer any additional damage to his impinged shoulder by trying to pitch through the injury, manager John Farrell announced Wednesday, April 20.

Fantasy Tip: Henry Owens or Roenis Elias are the likely rotation replacements for Kelly, and Owens is probably the best fantasy grab in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Elias is more of a speculative add for AL-only leagues. Kelly is likely looking at a four- to six-week break from throwing, and given his inconsistency over the past two seasons, he isn't a stash candidate in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly could miss considerable time

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 09:10:17 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) could miss considerable time with a right shoulder impingement. 3B Travis Shaw was out four to six weeks before he resumed throwing with a shoulder impingement before winter ball last November. Kelly was clocked at only 89-90 mph to begin the game after being ranked seventh in the majors in average fastball velocity (95.4 mph) last year. SP Henry Owens could be the likely choice to take Kelly's spot in the rotation, or Boston could consider SP Roenis Elias, who has a 3.86 ERA in two starts for Class AAA Pawtucket but has seven walks in 9 1/3 innings. Owens has allowed just two runs in 18 innings in three starts at Pawtucket, but he's walked 10 hitters.

Fantasy Tip: This doesn't look good for Kelly and his owners. In many mixed leagues, you can probably drop him for healthier and more productive arms. Owens has more upside with his dominance, but both he and Elias can be inconsistent because of their shaky control. Whoever gets the nod will be worth a cheap flyer in deep mixed and AL leagues.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly hits the 15-day DL

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:53:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, April 19, due to a right shoulder impingement.

Fantasy Tip: With Kelly on the shelf, look for Roenis Elias, Brian Johnson and Henry Owens to be candidates to slide into the rotation in his stead.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly has shoulder impingement

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 19:31:19 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) suffered a right shoulder impingement in his start Tuesday, April 19, against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain if this injury will force Kelly to the 15-day disabled list, but if he is forced to miss time it could mean Roenis Elias slides into the rotation in his place. Brian Johnson and Henry Owens could also be candidates should Kelly be forced to miss any starts.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly left with shoulder injury

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 17:15:30 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) left his start Tuesday, April 19, against the Tampa Bay Rays because of a shoulder injury. He managed to throw just 23 pitches in the ballgame, recording only 10 for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of the injury is still unknown but if Kelly has to miss time, Roenis Elias would be the best candidate to fill his spot in the rotation. Elias would have interesting potential for fantasy teams in deep leagues if he were to land on the Boston pitching staff. He displayed much notable promise as a rookie two years ago with the Mariners. Brian Johnson and Henry Owens are candidates as well.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly leaves in first inning

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 16:47:47 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (undisclosed) left his start in the first inning Tuesday, April 19, opposite the Tampa Bay Rays due to an apparent injury.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly walked two of the four batters he faced and was clearly in pain, so hopefully this is nothing serious. More information should be known later but if Kelly has to miss an extended period of time, Roenis Elias would probably be the next man up in the rotation. The former Seattle Mariner would have some potential in deep leagues.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly shining in camp

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 16:01:50 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly allowed only one run and struck out six in seven innings in his spring start Thursday, March 24. He walked one and allowed five hits to lower his spring ERA to 1.35 in five games and 20 innings. "My springs have not been very good ever since I've been drafted -- this one has probably been easily the best," said Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: It's still spring training, so take it with a grain of salt, especially since the New York Mets were using mainly minor leaguers Thursday. Kelly throws hard and can generate K's, but his command and control remain inconsistent. If you're looking for a source of strikeouts late in deep mixed leagues, he could be your guy.

Red Sox | Boston rotation not finalized

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 12:57:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox SPs Rick Porcello, Joe Kelly and either Roenis Elias or Steven Wright will fill out the remainder of the rotation after SPs David Price and Clay Buchholz, but the order and fifth starter have not been determined, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Porcello and Kelly are both inconsistent and nothing more than low-end options in deep mixed leagues. There is spot-start upside for both, but limiting your exposure to favorable matchups and AL-only leagues is advised. Elias and Wright are also just AL-only options with little upside.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly in line to start

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 10:00:19 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly is in line to be the team's No. 5 starter, according to manager John Farrell. Ps Tom Layne and Steven Wright are the leading candidates to fill the final two bullpen spots.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly throws hard. So far that's really all he's shown, although he has glimpses of greatness. Too much inconsistency to rely on him for anything more than a bench spot in deep mixed leagues.
