Red Sox | Joe Kelly knocked around

Fri, 27 May 2016 19:22:50 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly allowed five earned runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out eight over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: Consistency has always been an issue for Kelly, and he should be reserved for friendly matchups in daily formats.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly flirts with no-hitter

Sat, 21 May 2016 16:47:04 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly lost a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning Saturday, May 21. He allowed one hit and three walks while fanning seven in 6 2/3 innings in his win over the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly will have spurts of brilliance, but consistency is what ails him. He remains a matchup play in DFS.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly set to start Saturday

Fri, 20 May 2016 13:56:56 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) is officially scheduled to be activated from the disabled list and start against the Cleveland Indians Saturday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Taking a wait-and-see approach with Kelly Saturday is advised. He has a 4.80 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP and a 7.1 K/9 through 38 starts since joining the Red Sox in 2014. There is some upside, though. Kelly posted an impressive 7-0 record, 2.35 ERA, with 36 strikeouts through 46 innings over his final eight starts of 2015.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly to start Saturday

Tue, 17 May 2016 16:03:43 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) will come off the disabled list to start Saturday, May 21, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Take a wait-and-see approach with Kelly in most mixed leagues before adding him off the waiver wire or using him in your starting lineups. The hard-throwing righty had a 9.35 ERA and 2.76 WHIP in three starts before his injury. The 11.4 strikeouts per nine are nice, but you can't justify it given his other numbers.

Red Sox | Eduardo Rodriguez still rehabbing

Sun, 15 May 2016 17:07:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) and SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) will both make another rehab start for Class AAA Pawtucket, manager John Farrell said Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Of the two, Rodriguez is the player to stash if he is available in your league.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly could be activated

Thu, 12 May 2016 16:35:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) could be activated from the disabled list without making another rehab start, as suggested by manager John Farrell. Kelly will be evaluated Friday, May 13, in Boston.

Fantasy Tip: Even so, his position in the rotation could be in jeopardy with how well knuckleballer Steven Wright has pitched. Furthermore, youngster Eduardo Rodriguez is close to making it back to the majors, too, and he and Wright would consume the last two spots on the pitching staff. Kelly did himself no favors by posting a disastrous 9.35 ERA and 2.77 WHIP in his first three starts, so he could be on the outside looking in even when he's healthy.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly not a bullpen candidate

Fri, 06 May 2016 16:06:23 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) is not being considered for a move to the bullpen when he's ready to return from the disabled list, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Kelly is making his first rehab start for Class AAA Pawtucket Friday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: The rotation will be quite crowded when both Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez are ready to return from injury, so if Kelly doesn't turn things around quickly, the bullpen may be in his future. The hard-throwing right-hander has an impressive 11 K's in 8 2/3 innings, but his 10.4 walks per nine innings are killing his fantasy owners. Keep him stashed in AL-only leagues but look for better options in mixed universes.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly working up pitch count

Wed, 04 May 2016 23:10:02 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) is scheduled to throw 55 pitches for Class AAA Pawtucket in his minor-league rehab start.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly is expected to make two more rehab starts before returning. Keep him reserved in all fantasy formats, and avoid him in DFS play, until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly to rehab Friday

Tue, 03 May 2016 15:13:35 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start with Class AAA Pawtucket Friday, May 6. He's expected to make at least two rehab starts.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly throws hard and strikes out plenty (11.4 K/9), but he's been a disaster in his three starts this year (9.35 ERA, 10.4 BB/9) for Boston. He should only be stashed in AL-only leagues while he's recovering from his injury, but keep an eye on him in deep mixed formats if he returns and turns things around.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly throws bullpen session

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 19:29:01 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday, April 29. He is expected to throw another session Tuesday, May 2, before possibly beginning a rehab assignment, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly has been sidelined due to a right shoulder impingement and could return to action sometime next month if all goes well, so he should remain stashed in AL-only fantasy leagues. SP Henry Owens would be the pitcher most likely to lose his spot in the rotation when Kelly returns.
