The St. Louis Cardinals placed SP Joe Kelly (hamstring) on the disabled list Thursday, April 17. The club is recalling RPs Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon from Triple-A Memphis and optioning RP Keith Butler in corresponding moves.
Fantasy Tip: Tyler Lyons is believed to be the replacement in the rotation for Kelly. Lyons won't miss a lot of bats, but he'll have at least two weeks to give you valuable innings in NL-only universes.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Joe Kelly (hamstring) will be re-evaluated in St. Louis Thursday, April 17. If he's unable to make his next start Monday, April 21, SP Tyler Lyons is expected to fill in.
Fantasy Tip: There's a decent chance that Kelly lands on the DL, depending on the severity of the hammy strain. Lyons isn't attractive unless Kelly is out for at least two weeks or more.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Joe Kelly has been named the team's fifth starter. SP Carlos Martinez heads to the bullpen.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly is worth a flier as one of your final picks in mixed leagues and presents decent upside if he can stick in the rotation.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, but the team isn't ruling out the possibility. Dr. James Andrews didn't find any structural damage in Garcia's shoulder, but he'll receive a cortisone injection Wednesday, Feb. 26. He hasn't thrown since Feb. 18.
Fantasy Tip: It's great news that there is no structural damage, but Garcia just can't seem to get past his shoulder woes. If he can miss minimal time, the Cardinals may go with Joe Kelly to replace him in the rotation. If this is something that lingers well into the season, don't rule out Carlos Martinez making the transition to starter. Martinez has much more upside than Kelly and would be worth a roster spot in deep mixed leagues.

St. Louis Cardinals SPs Joe Kelly and Carlos Martinez are battling for the final spot in the starting rotation. Martinez could begin the season in the rotation at Triple-A Memphis if he doesn't win the job.
Fantasy Tip: The latter scenario is more likely with Martinez starting in Triple-A. He has lights-out stuff, but he had trouble getting through five innings in his spot starts last season. Kelly is 13-9 with a 3.03 ERA in 31 starts and was huge in breaking the team out of a slump last season. He serves as a sneaky NL-Only mid-rotation candidate and a late-round flier in mixed leagues. Martinez's potential and hype will likely make him come off the board before the final few rounds, but his job uncertainty anoints him as a flier in mixed leagues.
