Athletics | Josh Phegley to begin rehab assignment

Fri, 20 May 2016 18:30:31 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Josh Phegley (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Nashville Saturday, May 21. He is expected to play in at least four games before coming off the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley has been sidelined with right knee inflammation and has minimal value in AL-only and two-catcher fantasy leagues as the A's backup catcher. The 28-year-old was batting .270 with three RBI in 37 at-bats prior to getting injured. C Matt McBride will continue to serve as the backup to C/1B Stephen Vogt until Phegley is able to return.

Athletics | Josh Phegley to DL, Jesse Hahn up

Tue, 17 May 2016 09:27:29 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Josh Phegley (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation Tuesday, May 17. SP Jesse Hahn was called up from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley is the A's backup catcher, so he had minimal fantasy value in deep AL-only and two-catcher formats. Hahn will be making the start against the Rangers Tuesday night. He has a 3.00 ERA with only four strikeouts in 12 innings in his two starts for Oakland this year. If he sticks in the rotation he's one to consider adding in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, but his lack of strikeouts (career 6.8 K/9) limits his upside. He's a weak option in daily leagues tonight.

Athletics | Josh Phegley could land on DL

Mon, 16 May 2016 17:12:37 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Josh Phegley (knee) could end up on the disabled list if he doesn't play by the weekend, according to manager Bob Melvin. However, Phegley is doing better and says he's "feeling awesome."

Fantasy Tip: Regardless of how he's feeling, he has no business being on fantasy rosters except maybe in the deepest of two-catcher AL-only leagues. For as long as he remains out, that would serve to give a bit of a boost to Stephen Vogt, who would rack up more starts behind the dish as a result.

Athletics | Josh Phegley receives injection

Fri, 13 May 2016 13:44:04 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Josh Phegley (knee) received a cortisone shot Thursday, May 12, for right knee inflammation. C Matt McBride was called up from the minors for depth.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley is the primary backup to Stephen Vogt at catcher, and Phegley is hitting .270 with no home runs and three RBI. His fantasy value lies mainly in daily formats when he spells Vogt behind the plate in worthwhile matchups.

Athletics | Josh Phegley draws into lineup

Mon, 09 May 2016 12:05:14 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Josh Phegley is starting at catcher and hitting eighth against Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz Monday, May 9. C Stephen Vogt is serving as the designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley is hitting over .300 in 33 at-bats this year but didn't fare so well against righties (.220/.277/.431) with four of his nine home runs against right-handers last year. He's facing an inconsistent pitcher in Buchholz, but the low lineup position limits Phegley's daily ceiling tonight.

Athletics | Three A's out for nightcap

Sat, 07 May 2016 14:23:54 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Stephen Vogt, OF Coco Crisp and 3B Danny Valencia are out for Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday, May 7. C Josh Phegley is hitting eighth, 1B Billy Butler is hitting sixth and 3B Chris Coghlan hits fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley has a .310 average on the season and could be a sneaky basement flyer against Ubaldo Jimenez. Cogs is hitting just .155 and .118 in the last seven days. He has four homers and 11 RBI, and the matchup is nice. We could see streaming him tonight. Butler has been a shell of his former self this year, and he's not worth the start.

Athletics | Josh Phegley draws into lineup

Tue, 03 May 2016 15:40:07 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Josh Phegley is starting behind the plate and is hitting sixth against Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma Tuesday, May 3. OF Coco Crisp will start on the bench. C Stephen Vogt is serving as the designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: You could certainly do worst than Phegley if you're looking for low-priced catching options in DFS action, but keep in mind the A's backup catcher hit only .220 with four of his nine home runs against right-handers in 2015.

Athletics | Stephen Vogt resting Saturday

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 09:53:08 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Stephen Vogt is not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Chris Devenski Saturday, April 30. C Josh Phegley will start behind the plate and bat eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley is receiving the start because the A's are playing a day game following a night game. He has eight hits through his first 23 at-bats (.348) this year and is worth considering as a productive means of salary cap relief in daily fantasy contests. Expect Vogt to return to action Sunday, May 1.

Athletics | Billy Burns, Stephen Vogt out

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 11:53:47 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Billy Burns and C Stephen Vogt are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 27. OF Coco Crisp is in center field and hitting leadoff, C Josh Phegley is catching and batting eighth, while 1B Billy Butler is serving as the designated hitter and is batting sixth against Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp is barely hitting over .200 in 54 at-bats this year, so he remains a low-end outfield consideration for DFS despite hitting atop the lineup. Phegley hit just .220 with four home runs against righties last year and isn't all that attractive, either. Butler is in there because he sports a .405 average (34-for-84) with two home runs and 15 RBI against Verlander in his career. He's a sneaky under-the-radar value play tonight.

Athletics | Stephen Vogt receives day off

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 08:25:43 -0700

Oakland Athletics C Stephen Vogt is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ Saturday, April 23. C Josh Phegley will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Phegley has picked up six hits in his 16 at-bats this month and could be a starting option in some daily fantasy leagues. He may not be the best option in most mixed leagues.
