Mets | Dillon Gee likely to enter rotation

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 10:55:02 -0700

New York Mets SP Dillon Gee is expected to start the year in the starting rotation after the injury to SP Zack Wheeler (elbow). Gee was a longtime starter that was going to be banished to the bullpen for the start of 2015. However, the Mets have several pitching prospects in SPs Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Rafael Montero that are close to the rotation and may be considered early in the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gee is the favorite to start the year in the rotation, but depending on how the prospects are looking, he may be bumped back to the bullpen in short order. That makes him not worthy of a selection in standard mixed leagues. However, he could make a difference early in the year in NL-only formats. Keep him in mind there.

Mets | Matz selected

Wed, 10 Jun 2009 08:41:05 -0700

MLB.com's Tim Britton reports the New York Mets selected P Steven Matz from Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, N.Y., in the second round of the First-Year Player Draft. Matz, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-hander, was 6-1 with a 0.47 ERA through seven starts in his senior season, with 81 strikeouts in 44 innings. He allowed just 11 hits and 15 walks. He throws consistently in the low 90s and can reach 94 mph. The 18-year-old has the potential to throw even harder once he fills out physically and cleans up a currently violent delivery. Matz has a curveball and changeup, but both pitches are inconsistent. Scouts expect his curveball to be an above-average pitch.
