Mets | Logan Verrett won't be skipped

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 15:43:04 -0700

New York Mets SP Logan Verrett won't be skipped with the team having an off day Thursday, July 21, and he'll face the Miami Marlins Friday, July 22, followed by SP Jacob deGrom Saturday, July 23, and SP Steven Matz Sunday, July 24. Manager Terry Collins said it's not time for the team's established starters to forgo extra rest.

Fantasy Tip: Verrett is normally a swing man/long reliever, so he has little fantasy upside outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues in the short term. He allowed two earned runs in his last outing in six innings but is a very risky daily pick as your second starter Friday against the Fish.

Mets | Steven Matz roughed up in Chitown

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 21:38:12 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz was pounded for four earned runs, eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts over five innings in a loss Monday, July 18, against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Matz has lost three straight starts and five straight decisions dating back to May 25. His ERA has risen from 2.28 to 3.56 during the slow slide. He remains a must-start in most fantasy formats and DFS play despite the winless span. He hasn't been that bad, as his run support has dried up considerably.

Mets | NYM set rotation for second half

Wed, 13 Jul 2016 19:32:48 -0700

New York Mets SP Bartolo Colon will open the second half Friday, July 15, against the Philadelphia Phillies, followed by SP Logan Verrett Saturday, July 16, and SP Jacob deGrom Sunday, July 17. SP Steven Matz will pitch Monday, July 18, against the Chicago Cubs while SP Noah Syndergaard works Tuesday, July 19.

Fantasy Tip: Matz probably has the worst assignment of all for fantasy owners as he works on the road against All-Star Jake Arrieta and the Cubs. Colon, Verrett and deGrom face much better circumstances facing Philadelphia.

Mets | Steven Matz loses fourth straight start

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 13:48:54 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz fell to 7-5 overall and 0-4 in his last four starts Sunday, July 10. Matz gave up three earned runs, walked four and struck out five in a 3-2 loss to the Washington Nationals.

Fantasy Tip: Matz has been on a cold streak on the mound, and for that reason he should be left alone. He will get a natural break to get some rest, but Matz may need more than just rest to overcome this slump.

Mets | Steven Matz takes hard-luck loss

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 21:58:27 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz watched his winless streak get extended to seven starts Tuesday, July 5, against the Miami Marlins despite giving up only two runs on six hits while striking out six over seven innings.

Fantasy Tip: Matz faced no more than four batters until the seventh inning, when Giancarlo Stanton decided to take the game over with the first of his two home runs. The southpaw isn't pitching nearly as well as he was during his 7-1 start, but he hasn't exactly been aided by the fact the Mets' offense hasn't helped him much in half of his outings during his winless streak. Regardless, he'll head into his final start before the break with a 7-4 record and 3.34 ERA.

Mets | Syndergaard, Matz to keep pitching

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 14:30:12 -0700

New York Mets SPs Noah Syndergaard (elbow) and Steven Matz (elbow) are both dealing with bone spurs but will continue to pitch, according to manager Terry Collins. Matz's spurs are worse and will need to be surgically removed eventually, although the Mets are hoping it can wait until the offseason. Surgery will require a three-month recovery timeline. Syndergaard's bone spur is "very small," and 90% of pitchers have something comparable, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. Syndergaard is being treated with anti-inflammatories and won't need offseason surgery. The Mets have assurances from team doctors that Matz can't do more damage by continuing to pitch through his issue. The Mets will monitor Matz on a start-to-start basis to make sure he's not changing his mechanics and compromising his body in another way. Alderson said New York will consider going to a six-man rotation when SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) returns in August.

Fantasy Tip: It's troublesome to see the Mets' young starters deal with elbow concerns, but at least they aren't significant issues. However, at least in the immediate future, that makes both Syndergaard and Matz very risky fantasy starters. Matz is a bigger question mark since his bone spurs are more significant, and the good news with Thor is that his velocity wasn't affected in his start Monday.

Mets | Steven Matz pushed back to Thursday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:27:51 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) will make his next start against the Chicago Cubs Thursday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Matz will have his start pushed back a day, and Logan Verrett will make a spot start against the Washington Nationals in place of Matz Wednesday, June 29. View both hurlers as risky options, as Matz is pitching with bone spurs in his left elbow against a high-end offense, and Verrett has underwhelming numbers as a starter (4.61 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 7.5 K/9).

Mets | Surgery an option for Steven Matz

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:39:10 -0700

Updating previous reports, New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) will discuss whether to have surgery on his elbow Tuesday, June 28. If he has an operation now, it would be six weeks before he'd be able to resume throwing.

Fantasy Tip: Pitchers often pitch through bone spurs, but the Mets may want Matz to address the issue now if he's unable to pitch through the pain in his left elbow. Either way, Matz owners should be very concerned, as he may lose his effectiveness if he pitches through the issue. Make plans for the worst if you own the young lefty.

Mets | Bone spur for Steven Matz

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 13:51:23 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) is dealing with a bone spur in his elbow, according to three team sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets are considering skipping Matz's next turn against the Nationals on Wednesday, and you should too if you own him in fantasy. Bone spurs aren't a serious issue but they can cause discomfort and may require surgery for Matz eventually. It remains to be seen how the Mets will handle this case, but prepare for the worst if you own Matz.

Mets | Steven Matz doesn't have structural damage

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 13:23:29 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) does not have structural damage in his arm, but he's still dealing with pain. His next start remains up in the air.

Fantasy Tip: That's good news that Matz's elbow injury doesn't appear very serious, but the Mets are likely to play it safe and skip his next turn in the rotation Wednesday. Even if Matz does start against the Washington Nationals, it'd be wise to avoid him until he proves he's fully healthy again.
