Mets | Incredible debut for Steven Matz

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 20:14:42 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz won in his major league debut, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out six in 7 2/3 innings against the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, June 28. He also went 3-for-3 with four RBI, becoming the only major league pitcher to record four RBI in their debut.

Fantasy Tip: Matz certainly didn't disappoint, and the highly-touted prospect looks like a worthwhile add in just about every format following his impressive debut.

Mets | Steven Matz the real deal

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 09:25:43 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz, who went 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA in 15 games for Class AAA Las Vegas in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this year, has made big strides with the development of his curveball and changeup, according to scouts. A scout who saw Matz recently said: "He's ready to come up and slot himself with the other young guns."

Fantasy Tip: Matz should have already been owned in dynasty and keeper leagues, and he's worth picking up in all other formats now, even in shallow mixed leagues if you have space. He'll make his big league debut Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field, which makes him more palatable as your second pitcher on FantasyScore.

Mets | Steven Matz to start Sunday

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 15:37:52 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz will start against the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, June 28, according to a source. He is slotting into the rotation spot of SP Jon Niese, but the Mets are returning to a six-man rotation for now.

Fantasy Tip: A return to the six-man rotation for the Mets will slightly devalue those in the rotation like Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard. It's designed to give their youngsters extra rest and also take some of the heavy lifting off of veteran Bartolo Colon. Matz will be facing the Cincinnati Reds Sunday and makes for a risk/reward play on FantasyScore. Add Matz if he's available in traditional leagues, as he can be an immediate boost to your fantasy pitching staff.

Mets | Steven Matz being promoted

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 14:53:33 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Steven Matz is being promoted from the minor leagues, a source confirmed.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if another starter is landing on the DL or if the Mets are going back to a six-man rotation. Stay tuned. Matz dominated Class AAA pitching this year and can make an immediate fantasy impact in the rotation. Add him immediately in traditional leagues if you need a pitching boost and consider him an attractive value play early on in FantasyScore. Matz's turn would come up Sunday, when the Mets face the Cincinnati Reds. If Matz is slotted in then, he'd be a risk/reward candidate in his first major league start for daily gamers.

Mets | Steven Matz coming up?

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 11:46:20 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz is being called up from the minors Thursday, June 25, according to sources. However, the Mets aren't confirming the move.

Fantasy Tip: Matz has dominated Class AAA hitters with a 2.19 ERA and 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings over 14 starts for Las Vegas. The Mets have been pondering calling up Matz the past several weeks, and they could go back to a six-man rotation to give the rest of their young pitching staff more rest. The move isn't confirmed, but it seems imminent regardless. Run to your league's waiver wire and grab Matz immediately if he's available. He can make an immediate fantasy impact in tradition leagues and at FantasyScore.

Mets | NY looking to trade starting pitcher

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 15:51:41 -0700

The New York Mets are looking to trade one of their starting pitchers in short order. SP Steven Matz has been wasting away at Class AAA Las Vegas.

Fantasy Tip: The most likely candidate to be dealt is Jon Niese ($4,900, 9.8% of cap), who continues to be inconsistent with a 4.43 ERA and only 6.4 strikeouts per nine innings in 11 starts (63 innings). A move out of New York could only hurt Niese's fantasy value even more, depending on where he lands. Matz is another top pitching prospect for the Mets that should be stashed now in dynasty and NL-only leagues. He could have a fantasy impact similar to Noah Syndergaard if he's brought up soon.

Mets | Steven Matz's promotion looming

Tue, 09 Jun 2015 15:55:27 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz, who leads the Pacific Coast League with a 1.94 ERA is expected to be called up to the majors within the next three weeks, according to a team source. Matz also has a league-leading 75 strikeouts, a 1.10 WHIP and a .207 opponent batting average in 74 1/3 innings with Class AAA Las Vegas. He has given up just four homers in the hitter-friendly league. If Matz is promoted, he will start, not pitch in relief. However, it's unclear how the Mets would open up a rotation spot for him. SPs Jon Niese and Dillon Gee are the most likely to be bumped from the rotation, and they both could be trade candidates.

Fantasy Tip: We've seen a handful of top prospects enter the big leagues and pay immediate dividends for fantasy owners this year, including fellow Mets prospect Noah Syndergaard. There's no reason this left-handed pitcher couldn't do the same, so he should be firmly on your radar at this point, especially in NL-only and keeper leagues.

Mets | Steven Matz coming up soon for Mets?

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 16:15:23 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz is currently 6-3 with a 1.98 ERA in 11 outings for Class AAA Las Vegas this year, and he's been limited to 77 and 79 pitches, respectively, in his last two starts, according to an organizational source. The Mets are saving Matz for the big leagues. Matz has 70 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings and a WHIP of 1.05. "It's like taking a big league guy and throwing him against a rookie ball team," a Pacific Coast League talent evaluator said. "He just dominates every night he goes out."

However, the Mets are currently using a six-man rotation in the big leagues, with SP Dillon Gee (groin) slated to return to pitch against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, June 3. SP Jon Niese is struggling with a 9.00 ERA in his last four starts, but the Mets don't see the bullpen as a realistic place for him. Matz is unlikely to be promoted unless Niese is injured or traded. The Mets also might not promote Matz before the cutoff for Super Two arbitration eligibility June 15.

Fantasy Tip: Matz's numbers in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League make him even more impressive as a young prospect in an organization that has already been successful grooming the likes of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. Matz appears to be next, and he should be stashed in all dynasty and keeper leagues now, even though he doesn't have a clear path to the majors right now.

Mets | Dillon Gee likely to enter rotation

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 10:55:02 -0700

New York Mets SP Dillon Gee is expected to start the year in the starting rotation after the injury to SP Zack Wheeler (elbow). Gee was a longtime starter that was going to be banished to the bullpen for the start of 2015. However, the Mets have several pitching prospects in SPs Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Rafael Montero that are close to the rotation and may be considered early in the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gee is the favorite to start the year in the rotation, but depending on how the prospects are looking, he may be bumped back to the bullpen in short order. That makes him not worthy of a selection in standard mixed leagues. However, he could make a difference early in the year in NL-only formats. Keep him in mind there.

Mets | Steven Matz had surgery

Mon, 24 Feb 2014 12:06:43 -0800

New York Mets P Steven Matz (knee) underwent surgery last October to clean out his knee. He had a 2.62 ERA in 21 starts with Low Single-A Savannah last year. He's likely to begin the 2014 season with Single-A St. Lucie.
