Wed, 10 Jun 2009 08:41:05 -0700 MLB.com's Tim Britton reports the New York Mets selected P Steven Matz from Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, N.Y., in the second round of the First-Year Player Draft. Matz, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-hander, was 6-1 with a 0.47 ERA through seven starts in his senior season, with 81 strikeouts in 44 innings. He allowed just 11 hits and 15 walks. He throws consistently in the low 90s and can reach 94 mph. The 18-year-old has the potential to throw even harder once he fills out physically and cleans up a currently violent delivery. Matz has a curveball and changeup, but both pitches are inconsistent. Scouts expect his curveball to be an above-average pitch.
