Lackey has three years remaining on his five-year, $82.5 million pact. However, the expected compensation will involve Cubs' minor leaguers, although not OF Brett Jackson, P Trey McNutt or P Matt Szczur. Cash will not be part of the swap. While the San Diego Padres have not confirmed the report, general manager Jed Hoyer is expected to be hired as the Cubs' next general manager under Theo Epstein. There will be no compensation for Hoyer, according to sources. Padres vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes will become the new GM in San Diego.

The chances of the Red Sox landing SS Starlin Castro or SP Matt Garza are highly unlikely. OF Brett Jackson, OF Matt Szczur, 3B Josh Vitters, P Trey McNutt, P Jon Jackson, P Alberto Cabrera and IF Jeff Baker are all options to be dealt as compensation.
