Chicago Cubs OF Brett Jackson is mostly unaffected by the deal of OF Marlon Byrd to the Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 21. It was a deal made due to Byrd's contract status, and not one to open up a spot on the 25-man roster for Jackson. President of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer remain determined not to rush along prospects, and promote them only when they believe the player is major league-ready.

Cubs | Too early for two top prospects

Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein said it's too early to call up 1B Anthony Rizzo or OF Brett Jackson. "Those guys are continuing their development at Triple-A, and things that they're working on, they need to continue to improve," Epstein said. "We're also not giving up on guys after a homestand and a road trip. Guys are trying to get into the rhythm of a season and show what they can do."

Chicago Cubs OF Brett Jackson will begin the 2012 season with Triple-A Iowa despite hitting .385 in eight spring training games so far. "It's just at-bats sometimes," manager Dale Sveum said of what's needed. "Some of these guys get to the big leagues now before they get 2,000 at-bats in the minor leagues. You learn with more at-bats, tinkering. He's got a pretty good understanding of the strike zone. The only time he swings at bad pitches is when he has two strikes on him."

Chicago Cubs OF Brett Jackson wants to make the team out of camp, but the team won't rush him. A summertime arrival at Wrigley Field might be more realistic. The team told the Boston Red Sox that Jackson was untouchable in the compensation negotiations for president of baseball operations Theo Epstein.

Red Sox | Trying to get rid of John Lackey

The Boston Red Sox proposed that the Chicago Cubs take SP John Lackey's contract as part of the compensation for general manager Theo Epstein's move to Chicago. Lackey has three years remaining on his five-year, $82.5 million pact. However, the expected compensation will involve Cubs' minor leaguers, although not OF Brett Jackson, P Trey McNutt or P Matt Szczur. Cash will not be part of the swap.

While the San Diego Padres have not confirmed the report, general manager Jed Hoyer is expected to be hired as the Cubs' next general manager under Theo Epstein. There will be no compensation for Hoyer, according to sources. Padres vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes will become the new GM in San Diego.

The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox are expected to begin their compensation talks regarding general manager Theo Epstein in the near future. Epstein has agreed to a five-year, $18.5 million deal with the Cubs, and the Red Sox will be compensated in the form of a player or two. The chances of the Red Sox landing SS Starlin Castro or SP Matt Garza are highly unlikely. OF Brett Jackson, OF Matt Szczur, 3B Josh Vitters, P Trey McNutt, P Jon Jackson, P Alberto Cabrera and IF Jeff Baker are all options to be dealt as compensation.
