Rays | Nick Franklin sent down

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 14:41:03 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SS Nick Franklin was optioned to Triple-A Durham Thursday, July 31.

Fantasy Tip: For now, Franklin will provide Tampa with organizational middle infield depth. He should only be owned in dynasty leagues.

Rays | Acquire Drew Smyly and Nick Franklin

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 13:25:14 -0700

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired SP Drew Smyly and SS Nick Franklin from the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners, respectively, as part of a three-way deal involving SP David Price and OF Austin Jackson.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly remains a low-end starter in mixed league. The Rays' offense lacks the punch of Detroit's, but Tampa Bay has been rolling of late. His value takes a minor hit. Franklin is of interest in deep AL-only formats, if he gets recalled, otherwise he should be considered in keeper/dynasty formats only.

Mariners | Acquire Austin Jackson

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 13:09:36 -0700

The Seattle Mariners acquired OF Austin Jackson from the Detroit Tigers, as part of a three-way deal involving SP David Price and SP Drew Smyly. The Mariners are sending SS Nick Franklin to the Tampa Bay Rays in the deal.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson's fantasy stock takes a bit of a hit, but he has been scorching hot in July. Hopefully, the relocation won't interfere with his recent surge. Rajai Davis will take over the center field job in Detroit, which increases his fantasy value significantly. The already crowded Mariners outfield adds another body. James Jones' playing time and fantasy value will take the biggest hit.

Mariners | Nick Franklin might be open to Tampa deal

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 20:18:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SS Nick Franklin is a name which has come up in trade discussions with the Tampa Bay Rays, and he would be a fit in Tampa as he can do some of the same things 2B-OF Ben Zobrist can do. Franklin is also from nearby Orlando, and might not mind a move closer to home.

Fantasy Tip: Franklin appeared in the Triple-A All-Star Game in Durham this week, having a nice season with Tacoma. A move to St. Petersburg would be huge for his fantasy value, as he would find himself in the majors with likely a regular role. It might be a good idea for AL-only fantasy owners to stash him away in case of a deal.

Mets | Continue to look at trades for SS

Wed, 21 May 2014 10:06:25 -0700

The New York Mets are focused on an in-season trade to acquire a shortstop that the team can control for many seasons, but "there has been nothing lately" between them and the Seattle Mariners, with a focus on SSs Brad Miller or Nick Franklin, according to one source. The Mets are also monitoring Arizona Diamondbacks SS Didi Gregorius. New York, in the meantime, will see if 2B Wilmer Flores can handle the position.

Mariners | Corey Hart out 4-6 weeks

Tue, 20 May 2014 13:40:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said OF Corey Hart (hamstring) will miss four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: They may mix in uninspiring AL-only types Willie Bloomquist, Cole Gillespie, Stefen Romero, but without making any moves for a player outside the roster, Seattle will likely just trust the intriguing Nick Franklin with extra AB. If things get hairy, maybe they'll consider ex-M Kendrys Morales....

Mariners | Corey Hart to DL, Nick Franklin recalled

Tue, 20 May 2014 11:14:27 -0700

The Seattle Mariners placed OF Corey Hart (hamstring) on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring Tuesday, May 20, and recalled 2B Nick Franklin in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Hart's hamstring strain is a Grade 2 strain, which is the medium level of severity. Given Hart's extensive injury history, it'd be wise to assume that he'll probably take longer than 15 days to recover from this ailment. Franklin has been playing more outfield down on the farm, so he's a realistic candidate to see more work out there in his second stint in the bigs this year. Target him in AL-only leagues. Franklin could also fill in for the struggling Brad Miller at shortstop more often.
