Cardinals | Matt Adams exits with back injury

Thu, 26 May 2016 17:22:33 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Matt Adams (back) was removed from the game against the Washington Nationals Thursday, May 26, due to stiffness in the middle part of his back. OF Brandon Moss moved from left field to first base, with OF Jeremy Hazelbaker sliding over to left field from center field and OF Randal Grichuk entering the game to play center.

Fantasy Tip: Adams was 12-for-23 (.522) in his last eight games with three doubles, three homers and nine RBI, with his batting average going from .275 to .320 over this stretch. The severity of his injury is not yet known, so check back occasionally for updates on his status.

Cardinals | Jeremy Hazelbaker starting vs. Nats

Thu, 26 May 2016 13:27:20 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is starting in center field and leading off against Washington Nationals SP Joe Ross Thursday, May 26. OF Randal Grichuk is not in the starting lineup Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: After a hot start to the season, Hazelbaker has gone 7-for-43 with a .502 OPS through 45 plate appearances in May. His fantasy value is plummeting, and he shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a flier in daily contests Thursday. Grichuk should continue to see the bulk of starts in center field, and while hitting higher than .241 would be a boost, he does have solid counting stats (27 runs, seven home runs, 24 RBI and three stolen bases). Grichuk remains a solid option in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk walks off with win

Tue, 24 May 2016 00:19:45 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk hit his sixth homer of the season and his first career walk-off blast Monday, May 23, in a 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Grichuk has gone a long way toward helping solidify the Cardinals outfield, along with Matt Holliday and Stephen Piscotty. His batting average and slugging percentage are way down from last year, but his 23 runs scored (prior to Monday) make Grichuk a solid fantasy option.

Sat, 21 May 2016 10:22:16 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk (back) returned to the lineup Saturday, May 21, hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Grich is facing lefty Robbie Ray, but he has scuffled most of the season. He's a lower-middle start in DFS.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk sitting vs. Arizona

Fri, 20 May 2016 14:35:40 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk (back) is not in the starting lineup Friday, May 20. He was removed as a precaution Thursday, May 19, after he labored running the bases. OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is starting in center field and batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin Friday.

Fantasy Tip: The injury is expected to be mild, and this is likely just a precautionary night off for Grichuk. It has been a slightly underwhelming start for him with a .218/.300/.395 slash line. However, his 23 runs, five home runs, 19 RBI and three stolen bases are buoying his fantasy value. Expect him to continue being a middle-tier starter in the majority of seasonal leagues. Hazelbaker has been exceptional when called upon this season (.281/.324/.583 line), and despite not owning the traditional handedness advantage, the lefty-hitting outfielder has a solid .864 OPS against southpaws this year. View Hazelbaker as a solid option in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues and decent value play in daily contests Friday.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk exit was precautionary

Fri, 20 May 2016 11:45:15 -0700

Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk (back) was removed as a precaution Thursday, May 19, after he labored running the bases. Grichuk admitted he wasn't feeling 100% and was pulled. Grichuk said his back tightened up while throwing the previous day.

Fantasy Tip: Expect the team to treat Grich with kid gloves, especially since he hurt his back in the weight room last season. Jeremy Hazelbaker will be a fringe DFS option if Grichuk is forced to miss time this weekend. For Grichuk owners, he has scuffled enough this season that it makes sense to pull him from lineups outside of NL-only realms this weekend.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk exits with back injury

Thu, 19 May 2016 17:29:07 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk (back) left the game against the Colorado Rockies Thursday, May 19, because of left lower back tightness. He was replaced defensively by OF Jeremy Hazelbaker at the start of the fourth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Grichuk walked in his lone plate appearance and scored a run before exiting. If he is forced to miss additional games, expect Hazelbaker to see a good chunk of playing time in center field, which would make him worth considering as a value play in daily fantasy contests.

Cardinals | Cards shake up lineup Thursday

Thu, 19 May 2016 12:03:17 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SS Aledmys Diaz is hitting in the two-hole against Colorado Rockies SP Jon Gray Thursday, May 19. OF Stephen Piscotty moves to cleanup as a result, and OF Randal Grichuk is pushed down to seventh in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: Diaz has been one of the better hitters on the team all season, slashing .376/.403/.648 with six home runs and 20 RBI. The move up the lineup will certainly boost his fantasy value, especially in daily setups. Piscotty has been solid, too (.318-5-23) and remains a fine option in all formats. Grichuk is off to a slow start (.218-5-19), but he's hitting .306 (11-for-36) with a homer and six RBI since May 6. This move could let him relax more and continue turning things around. He's a contrarian play in DFS against Gray.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk hitting better

Wed, 18 May 2016 10:35:07 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk has hit .333 with six RBI in his last 33 at-bats. He is 10-for-22 (.455) when he puts the first pitch in play this season. Grichuk had a pinch-hit RBI single Tuesday, May 17, and said he finds himself more aggressive in pinch-hit opportunities and less in his own head because he hasn't watched as much video when he doesn't start.

"I see him taking some good at-bats," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "For us, it seems like the biggest thing is pitch recognition for Randal. If he's seeing the ball, laying off the tough pitches out of the zone, he's going to put the ball in play hard. And when he does, his odds are pretty high."

Fantasy Tip: Grich is going to strike out a lot. It's something he has done his entire professional career. However, he can get white hot for extended periods. Expect peaks and valleys with the 24-year-old, but now is a good time to buy low if an opportunity presents itself.

Cardinals | Randal Grichuk not playing

Tue, 17 May 2016 13:53:23 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 17. OF Jeremy Hazelbaker is starting in center field and is batting sixth against Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis.

Fantasy Tip: Hazelbaker was one of the biggest surprises of April, seemingly coming out of nowhere to post huge statlines. He has since cooled off with limited playing time and is hitting .192 (5-for-26) in May but does have two homers and five RBI. He could return nice value in a starting role tonight for daily gamers at a cheap price.
