Cardinals | Concerned with Shelby Miller's durability

Mon, 19 Mar 2012 13:56:32 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals were worried about SP Shelby Miller's durability after he reported to camp noticeably trimmer after working hard in the offseason to trim weight and body fat. "Shelby reported to spring training in very good physical condition, having lost weight and with a low body fat, but that was not necessarily a goal that he was given heading into the offseason," farm director John Vuch said. "Now that he's back with our strength and conditioning staff, they're making sure the plan he's following is geared toward ensuring he's getting in peak shape for baseball purposes. Once he's back in his normal baseball condition, durability shouldn't be a concern, and our medical staff feels that he should be where he needs to be by the time the season opens." Miller weighed 195 pounds last year.

Cardinals | Shelby Miller needs to work on curveball

Wed, 04 May 2011 07:15:28 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller needs to work on his curveball before the team promotes him to Double-A Springfield, according to Class A Palm Beach pitching coach Dennis Martinez. Miller is lighting it up in Class A with 42 strikeouts in 28 innings. Miller is reluctant to throw the curveball when trailing in the count because he has had limited success with it, and the team has played a number of close games. The Cardinals would like to see Miller throw about 70 percent fastballs and 30 percent curveballs, said Cardinals pitching coordinator Dyar Miller.
