Nationals | Drew Storen continues to pitch well

Thu, 06 Aug 2015 10:28:31 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen has retired 17 straight batters and has thrown 32 of his 35 pitches (94.1%) for strikes since being moved to the eighth-inning setup role for RP Jonathan Papelbon.

Fantasy Tip: Storen hasn't been happy with his demotion from the closer's role, but you wouldn't be able to tell by his performance. On the season, he is 2-0 with a 1.56 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 40 1/3 innings. He can still help owners in deeper leagues, but in shallow leagues, he's hard to carry if he's not closing out games.

Nationals | Jonathan Papelbon to close for Nats

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 09:41:59 -0700

Washington Nationals new RP Jonathan Papelbon will serve as the team's new closer after Washington traded for him Tuesday, July 28. RP Drew Storen, the previous closer, will move into an eighth-inning setup role. Papelbon was Philadelphia's career saves leader with 123 and is 17-for-17 in save chances in 2015. Papelbon wouldn't accept a trade to the Nationals unless he would remain a closer. Papelbon's $13 million option for 2016 becomes a guaranteed $11 million salary as part of the trade, and $3 million will be deferred, according to a major league source. Washington will pay Papelbon the prorated minimum of $507,500 for the rest of the year. Papelbon is expected to join his new team Wednesday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: Papelbon's fantasy value increases slightly now that he's expected to receive more save chances for a contending club. Storen's value obviously takes a huge hit without ninth-inning duties, although he could see the occasional save chance when Papelbon is rested. In shallow leagues, without the prospect for saves, Storen isn't worth a roster spot.

Nationals | Nats close to landing Jonathan Papelbon

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 14:59:08 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon is close to being traded to the Washington Nationals Tuesday, July 28, in exchange for a minor league pitcher, according to sources. Papelbon is expected to become the Nationals' new closer, pushing current closer Drew Storen into a setup role. The teams are still working through a number of "hurdles" before the deal is complete. Papelbon can block a trade to Washington, so he wants his $13 million vesting option to be guaranteed in order to approve the deal.

Fantasy Tip: The deal is expected to completed shortly, so stay tuned. Papelbon's fantasy value will increase slightly now that he's expected to have more closing opportunities with a contending club. Storen's value takes the biggest hit with a move to a setup role, and he can be dropped in shallow leagues without any save chances. Ken Giles should be picked up if he's available, as he's expected to move into the closer role in Philly with Papelbon gone.

Nationals | Drew Storen going strong

Tue, 26 May 2015 06:29:28 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen recorded his National League-leading 15th save Monday, May 25, in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. Storen has an 0.89 ERA on the season. His fastball is averaging 94.1 mph, which is his highest velocity since 2012.

Fantasy Tip: Storen is pitching as well as anyone in 2015, fanning more than 11 batters per nine innings, which is nearly three more than his career ratio. He's an obvious must-play in all fantasy leagues.

Nationals | Drew Storen rolling

Thu, 07 May 2015 06:10:45 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen has pitched six consecutive scoreless frames since his only blown save of the season April 21.

Fantasy Tip: Storen has a 1.50 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and 13 K's in 12 innings this season. His seat might have warmed a bit, but he's 8-for-9 in save chances and is firmly entrenched as the team's closer.

Nationals | WAS could bring Drew Storen along slowly

Sat, 04 Apr 2015 11:11:37 -0700

The Washington Nationals may avoid using CL Drew Storen (foot) on consecutive days during the first week of the regular season. He has not had the ability to pitch in back-to-back games during spring training because he has been battling a blister on the bottom of his right foot, resulting in a reduced workload. However, he is scheduled to pitch against the New York Yankees Saturday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: If Storen is unavailable to close, the Nats could turn to Matt Thornton (23 career saves) or Craig Stammen (one career save) in a pinch. Former Blue Jays CL Casey Janssen, who saved 25 games in 2014, is expected to begin the season on the disabled list and there is no timetable for his return.

Nationals | Drew Storen could pitch Wednesday

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 11:00:34 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen (toe) continues to deal with an open blister on his left big toe, but the team is hoping he can pitch again Wednesday, April 1.

Fantasy Tip: Storen should be fine for opening day next Monday. He's a legitimate closing option with more job security than he's ever had before in Washington. Casey Janssen (shoulder), Storen's primary setup man, is likely to start on the disabled list.

Nationals | Drew Storen leaves with toe blister

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 13:11:52 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen (toe) left the game because of a blister on his right big toe Monday, March 30. It is not considered a serious issue.

Fantasy Tip: Storen remains a second-tier closer in seasonal leagues and is worth targeting after the top options come off the board in drafts. He posted a 1.12 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 11 saves over 56 1/3 innings serving primarily as a setup man last season, and he recorded 43 saves in 2011 in the closer role.

Nationals | Drew Storen leaves game early

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 12:27:53 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen (undisclosed) walked off the field with a trainer during a spring training game Monday, March 30, because of an undisclosed reason.

Fantasy Tip: Storen is scheduled to be the closer this season, so owners should monitor the situation to see if it is a long-term situation.

Nationals | Drew Storen set to go Friday

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 07:30:41 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen (hand) is scheduled to pitch Friday, March 27, for the first time since having surgery to remove the hamate bone from his left hand.

Fantasy Tip: Storen is expected to be ready in time for the opener and is a good second reliever in traditional drafts.
