Washington Nationals RPs Rafael Soriano, Tyler Clippard and Craig Stammen are unavailable Friday, Aug. 23. RP Drew Storen will close if a save situation arises.
Fantasy Tip: Don't run out and add Storen. Soriano will likely be back to active duty tomorrow night.

Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen ditched his stiff-legged delivery when he was demoted to Triple-A Syracuse in favor of the standard leg kick he used when he was drafted 10th overall in 2009. "I just went back to what I did," Storen said. "That's why I was able to do it quick. It wasn't too crazy. It was going back to how I pitched for 20 years." He's more athletic with the old leg kick, and he allowed too many stolen bases before. He's now clocked at 1.3 seconds to home plate, compared to 1.8 seconds before being sent down.
His new delivery helps him throw more strikes, too. "The thing I like about my leg kick is, it automatically gets my arm up," Storen said. "It just happens. I felt like I had to worry about getting on top of the baseball. I don't have to do that when I have my leg kick." Manager Davey Johnson said Storen will pitch in late-inning situations with some of the other relievers struggling.

The Washington Nationals recalled RP Drew Storen from Triple-A Syracuse Thursday, Aug. 15, and optioned RP Ryan Mattheus in a corresponding move. Storen was sent down July 27 when he was 3-2 with two saves and a 5.95 ERA in 47 games. He was 0-0 with a 5.68 ERA in six games with Syracuse and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his last three outings on the farm.
Fantasy Tip: Storen will likely be returned to some sort of setup role. He has very little chance of seeing save opportunities for the rest of the season unless there is an injury to Rafael Soriano, who has been solid all year long.

The Washington Nationals optioned RP Drew Storen to Triple-A Syracuse Friday, July 26. "He needs to get right, mentally and mechanically," manager Davey Johnson said. "It's that simple. This is what's best for him."

Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano (personal) is unavailable to pitch Monday, April 22, after his wife gave birth to the couple's child. RP Drew Storen will come on in a save situation, if it arises.
Fantasy Tip: Make sure to get Storen in your lineup for today if you own him in any deep leagues. Soriano should be back within the next day or two.

Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals RP Rafael Soriano is unlikely to pitch in a save situation Friday, April 12, after pitching in each of the last three games. Manager Davey Johnson had yet to talk to Soriano, but it appears he's leaning toward resting his closer Friday. RP Drew Storen is expected to get the nod if a save situation arises. Soriano didn't pitch much this spring, and he tossed 24 pitches last night and a total of 57 during the series with the Chicago White Sox.
Fantasy Tip: Make sure you get Storen in your lineups if you own him in deep mixed leagues or NL-onlys. The Nationals definitely don't want to overwork Soriano so early in the season, so bank on him not appearing in a save sitch tonight.

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said the eighth inning setup role isn't etched in stone after he used RP Tyler Clippard in that spot Monday, April 1. Johnson plans to use RP Drew Storen in the eighth if the situation arises Wednesday, April 3. The role will be determined on a game-by-game basis.
Fantasy Tip: Storen and Clippard are good enough to own in NL-only leagues, and Storen would probably be the handcuff option to closer Rafael Soriano in cavernous mixed formats. However, a lot would likely have to go wrong with Soriano for him to lose the job.

Updating previous reports, Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said that if RP Drew Storen (back) was hurt during Game 5 of the NLDS last year, it was news to him. Rizzo said that Storen was getting treatment for his back, but his velocity and stuff were good.

Teammates of Washington Nationals RP Drew Storen (back) claim that he was dealing with terrible pain in his back during the playoff series in which he blew a late lead against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5 that ended the team's season. Storen reportedly spent much of those last three days of the season in the trainer's room receiving treatment for back spasms. General manager Mike Rizzo said he "didn't want to talk about" Storen's condition in Game 5. Rizzo also said Storen's blowup in that game wasn't the reason they went out and signed RP Rafael Soriano. "He was having real bad back spasms. That was the third day (pitching) in a row," OF Jayson Werth said. "He was banged up, man. No one knew. For him to just have the balls to go out there, that says a lot about him."
