Cardinals | Mike Leake attacking more

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 07:40:16 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake said he has been attacking hitters more when runners are in scoring position, which has contributed to his spike in strikeouts. When a runner reached third base Monday, July 18, Leake struck out the next two batters to strand the runner. An error allowed another runner to third base in the sixth inning, and Leake struck out the next batter to strand him. Leake has 45 strikeouts and three walks in his past 48 2/3 innings. He said he has felt stronger and in better shape in each start.

Fantasy Tip: Leake's numbers on the season won't enthrall you. He's 7-7 with a 4.00 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and a 6.69 K/9. That's his second-best K-rate of his career. However, he's pitching like an ace right now, and people forget that he's only 28 since he came up the year he was drafted. He should be owned everywhere, but some regression in strikeouts is to be expected.

Cardinals | Mike Leake strikes out 10 again

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 23:23:49 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake struck out 11 and walked none in a 10-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Monday, July 18. Leake became the first pitcher to accomplish 10 strikeouts, no walks, and one run or less allowed since Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw last season.

Fantasy Tip: Keep in mind the Padres do not have the best-hitting lineup, but this is still a nice feat nevertheless. Leake also became the first St. Louis pitcher to fan 10 or more batters in consecutive starts since Lance Lynn in 2012. Leake, who is now 7-7 overall, is worth the start in DFS formats and may be working his way into regular leagues with his good work in the second half.

Cardinals | St. Louis sets rotation

Tue, 12 Jul 2016 16:14:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia will start against the Miami Marlins Friday, July 15. He will be followed in the rotation by SP Adam Wainwright, SP Michael Wacha, SP Mike Leake and SP Carlos Martinez.

Fantasy Tip: All five pitchers have solid matchups coming out of the All-Star break and should be starting candidates in most mixed leagues and daily fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Mike Leake strikes out 10 in win

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 15:08:24 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake fanned 10 batters Sunday, July 10, in a 5-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Leake (6-7) allowed six hits and no walks in his first win since June 12.

Fantasy Tip: Leake has been a bit of a disappointment in the first half, and this win came against a lowly Milwaukee squad. Leake is more of a pitcher to be used in DFS starts as a lower-cost flyer, as he just doesn't have the tools yet to be played in regular-format leagues.

Cardinals | Mike Leake tagged with loss Thursday

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 19:15:53 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake (5-6) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over seven innings in a loss to the Kansas City Royals Thursday, June 30, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the loss, Leake has tossed three quality starts in his last four outings. He should continue to be viewed as a decent option in NL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues and a mid-tier consideration for DFS. Leake's next scheduled start will come versus the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday, July 5.

Cardinals | Mike Leake terrible in road start

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 22:37:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake was trampled for five runs - four earned - and nine hits with two walks and just one strikeout over 3 1/3 innings in a loss Saturday, June 25, against the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Leake had actually been pitching pretty well lately with quality starts in seven of his past nine outings. His WHIP sits at 1.24, which is basically right at his career average. He remains a solid NL-only fantasy option, a good play in deeper mixed formats and a decent mid-tier play in DFS.

Cardinals | Mike Leake wins, moves to 4-4

Tue, 31 May 2016 20:57:05 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake picked up his fourth win of the season Tuesday, May 31, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He tossed six innings of two-run ball, scattering five hits, one walk and striking out four.

Fantasy Tip: After slumping throughout April, Leake has settled in nicely, as tonight's outing registered as his fifth consecutive quality start. He's allowed two runs or fewer in all of them, and in the process, he has brought his ERA down two runs during the month. His strikeout total is unimpressive, but Leake is proving he can still be useful in various leagues.

Cardinals | Mike Leake dealing

Sat, 21 May 2016 16:18:05 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake allowed four hits and struck out three in seven shutout innings to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Leake is 3-0 with a 0.85 ERA in his last three starts. He's not going to be more than a midrange option in fantasy because he doesn't strike guys out, but he's certainly worth starting in most matchups right now.
