49ers | York talks about McCloughan's departure

Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports San Francisco 49ers president Jed York announced a "mutual parting" with general manager Scot McCloughan, using the term "private personal matter" to avoid discussing the matter in further detail. York said McCloughan is unable to join another team until after the 2010 NFL Draft. York is unsure if he will hire another general manager for the long term, but director of player personnel Trent Baalke will "take over" and run the draft. York said he and executive vice president Paraag Marathe will not be the team's next general manager or fill the role effectively.

Packers | Have spoken with McCloughan

Kevin Seifert, of ESPN.com, reports Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson said he has spoken with former San Francisco 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan recently "as a friend" but "not from a business standpoint." Technically, McCloughan remains an employee of the 49ers and would not be able to discuss job opportunities with any team. The Packers haven't yet filled the opening left behind by former director of football operations John Schneider, who left to become general manager of the Seattle Seahawks. Thompson said he wasn't certain whether the job will be filled. "We'll see," Thompson said. "It depends on how we make it through the spring. We're functioning pretty well right now."

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan is considering stepping down as general manager, according to sources. The reasons McCloughan is considering resigning were not immediately known. McCloughan met Wednesday, March 17, behind closed doors with 49ers upper management at the team offices in Santa Clara, sources said. The group included president and CEO Jed York, executive vice president of football and business operations Paraag Marathe, vice president of football affairs Keena Turner and senior advsior Michael Rossi.
