Giants | SF monitoring Philly relievers

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 11:42:29 -0700

The San Francisco Giants are scouring the reliever market and have had a top scout watching Philadelphia Phillies RPs Jeanmar Gomez and David Hernandez.

Fantasy Tip: While not a dominant closer by any stretch, Santiago Casilla isn't in any danger of losing his ninth-inning job, so Gomez and Hernandez would just bolster the back end. Gomez is a low-end fantasy closer without many strikeouts, and he'd lose most of his value in a setup role with the Giants.

Phillies | David Hernandez picks up save

Sat, 14 May 2016 19:53:11 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP David Hernandez picked up his first save of the season, allowing one run on two hits and a walk in a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: Jeanmar Gomez has been excellent as the primary closer, but after he pitched in three of the previous four games, Hernandez received the call. Hernandez isn't worth adding right now, but if Gomez starts to struggle, Hernandez could be the player to stash.

Phillies | Dalier Hinojosa was in line to close

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 08:29:17 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Dalier Hinojosa was in line to close the game Monday, April 4, before RP David Hernandez coughed up the lead in the eighth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Kudos to those who speculated on Hinojosa as he looks to have some breathing room. He makes a decent RP3 and should be plucked from waivers if possible.

Phillies | David Hernandez with bad outing

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 17:10:43 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP David Hernandez didn't retire a single hitter in the eighth inning trying to protect a 2-1 lead against the Cincinnati Reds on opening day Monday, April 4. Hernandez gave up three earned runs on a hit and three walks in his outing.

Fantasy Tip: The Phillies' bullpen is a mess, and manager Pete Mackanin hasn't declared a specific closer. Hernandez was in the running for ninth-inning duties with Dalier Hinojosa, but his outing Monday did nothing to help his cause. If you're speculating for saves, Hinojosa should be your first target, but don't expect much from this situation.

Phillies | Philly has not named closer yet

Fri, 01 Apr 2016 12:59:33 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RPs David Hernandez and Dalier Hinojosa are still candidates for the closer job because manager Pete Mackanin is not ready to make a decision. Mackanin said he wants to be 100% sure about a decision before naming a closer.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez entered spring training as the leading candidate for the closer job but was slowed by an injury. Hinojosa pitched well during the spring and could receive some save opportunities if the team does not name a closer. Both players should be owned in NL-only leagues and could be late-round options in deeper mixed leagues for owners looking for possible saves. Andrew Bailey was not mentioned as a closer option, which will hurt his fantasy value.

Phillies | David Hernandez effective Friday

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 08:20:49 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP David Hernandez (elbow) tossed one scoreless inning in a minor-league game Friday, March 18, retiring two of the three batters he faced by strikeout. His fastball topped out at 94 mph and he was also able to use his changeup and slider during the outing. General manager Matt Klentak said he is on track to be ready by opening day.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Hernandez will be used as the closer or if he has been surpassed in the competition this spring by Andrew Bailey. Hernandez has higher upside and a more impressive repertoire than Bailey, although both pitchers should be viewed as third or fourth relievers from a fantasy standpoint.

Phillies | David Hernandez still sore

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 15:08:37 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP David Hernandez (elbow) was beat up in a minor league outing Tuesday, March 15, and said he still had stiffness in his right arm. He's attributing some of it to the Tommy John surgery he had in April of 2014. Hernandez hasn't faced hitters in Grapefruit League action since March 1.

Fantasy Tip: Because of his injury, Andrew Bailey is starting to move past him as the closer to start the year. Hernandez has more upside and better stuff in a ninth-inning role, though, and it's not out of the question that he could regain the role early in the year if Bailey falters. Both are third or fourth relievers in fantasy, with Hernandez being more attractive.

Phillies | Philly won't use closer-by-committee

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 14:53:18 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said the team won't use a closer-by-committee. RP Andrew Bailey has impressed the coaching staff, and he may be leapfrogging RP David Hernandez (elbow) as the favorite this spring. "I feel like I'm ready to rock this year," Bailey said. "I've put the time in, and everything is healthy. It's all good." Bailey hasn't walked a batter all spring, but his fastball velocity has been in the low-90s.

Fantasy Tip: Right now it looks like Bailey has the leg up in the competition, but if he starts the year as the closer, his hold on the spot will be tenuous. Consider both Bailey and Hernandez your third or fourth fantasy closers as late-round flyers.

Phillies | Andrew Bailey in the lead?

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 08:56:50 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Andrew Bailey may be in the lead of the closer battle with RP David Hernandez (elbow), who recently returned to the mound Tuesday, March 15. Hernandez entered camp the favorite to be the closer, but he felt discomfort in his right elbow last month during the first week of full-squad workouts. Hernandez said he feels better than he has since camp opened.

Fantasy Tip: Bailey will have to stave off Edward Mujica along with Hernandez, and the winner will likely be an RP3 in fantasy. Hernandez is still worth the speculative, final-round flyer.

Phillies | David Hernandez has elbow issue

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 12:44:23 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies RP David Hernandez (elbow), who is the favorite to close this year, has an elbow "issue," and the severity is unknown at this time.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez is a sleeper for saves on a bad Phillies club. Keep an eye on his injury diagnosis, but if he's OK for Opening Day, he's not a bad target as a late-round flier. If his injury causes him to miss some time, it could open the door for Andrew Bailey or Edward Mujica to sneak into the ninth-inning role.
