Pittsburgh Pirates P Stolmy Pimentel is out of options, so the team will look hard at him during the spring. Manager Clint Hurdle suggested Sunday, Feb. 16, that Pimentel might be used in a role similar to SP Jeanmar Gomez last season, working in long relief and making spot starts. "We still envision him as a starter," Hurdle said, when asked of Pimentel's long-term outlook. "He will have every opportunity to break (camp) with the big club."

Pittsburgh Pirates RPs Jeanmar Gomez, Vin Mazzaro and Bryan Morris were unavailable against the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday, Aug. 18, after pitching Saturday, Aug. 17. The bullpen was depleted as a result of SP Jeff Locke only lasting 2 2/3 innings Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated SP Jeanmar Gomez (forearm) from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, June 26, and optioned P Duke Welker to the minors in a corresponding move.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) threw 73 pitches in his rehab start on Sunday, June 23, with Triple-A Indianapolis. He went four innings, allowing a run on four hits and a walk while fanning five. He's not expected to need another rehab outing before he's activated from the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Earlier reports suggested that the Magic Wandy would be activated this Saturday if all went well. He'd face the Milwaukee Brewers, a bit of a nemesis for him, if so. He'll push Jeanmar Gomez (forearm) to the bullpen when he returns.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole, along with SP Jeanmar Gomez (forearm), is unlikely to remain in the rotation once both SPs Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) and A.J. Burnett (calf) return from the disabled list in the next couple of weeks. Cole's next start has been pushed back to Friday, June 28, versus the Milwaukee Brewers, because Gomez is returning to the rotation on Wednesday, June 26, and the club is off on Thursday, June 27. Gomez would move to the bullpen once Rodriguez returns. A demotion of Cole appears to be the easiest solution once everyone is healthy.
"There's a business component to it, as far as keeping our depth," general manager Neal Huntington said. "Gerrit's probably got the best stuff of anybody in the rotation ... (and) he's made three impressive outings. But the challenge is, if we need another starter later, it may make sense to send Gerrit back so we have a sixth quality starter." Huntington stressed that the possibility that Cole will gain Super Two status won't be a factor in the decision. Cole and SP Jeff Locke are the only pitchers in the rotation who have minor league options remaining.
Fantasy Tip: However the Bucs paint this, it'd be a tough pill to swallow for Cole owners, who've watched him handle big league hitters with relative ease in three starts, going 3-0 with a 3.44 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and an 8/1 K/BB. Pittsburgh has legit pitching depth, as strange as that may seem. Charlie Morton has pitched well enough in his return from Tommy John surgery to stick, too. Burnett still isn't throwing from a mound, though, so there's plenty of time for this to shake out differently.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeanmar Gomez (forearm) tossed five innings of no-hit ball while walking one and striking out four in his rehab outing with Triple-A Indianapolis Wednesday, June 19.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said SP Jeanmar Gomez (forearm) will make another rehab start Tuesday, June 18, before the team decides what to do with him next.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett (calf) has a Grade 1 tear in his right calf and can't put weight on the leg. He's wearing a walking boot and hopes "it's not a six-week thing."
Fantasy Tip: It very well could be, though, meaning the Buccos probably have some NL-only options for starts opening up with the likes of Charlie Morton, Jeanmar Gomez (forearm), James McDonald (shoulder) and Jeff Karstens (shoulder).
