He played with the name Sano, his mother's maiden name, to respect the Dominican Republic. The plan is to have him start his career with the Twins' rookie Gulf Coast League squad in Fort Myers, Fla.

"We had a clear understanding that when (Rob Plummer, Sano's agent) was ready, he would give us a call," Huntington said. "Unfortunately, that didn't happen. That's the frustrating part about it. We tried to follow the process... We move on. There are players still out there who are eligible to be signed."

The deal is worth $3.15 million, which is the second largest bonus ever given to a Latin American player and the largest for a position player. Sano is expected to bypass the Latin American program and begin with the Twins' Gulf Coast League team.
