Astros | Luke Gregerson blows fifth save

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 04:38:23 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson blew his fifth save in 27 chances and took the loss in his team's 5-4 defeat to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, Aug. 9.

Fantasy Tip: This may be news for fantasy owners because, if Gregerson continues to struggle, he could be removed from the closer role or shifted to closer by committee. With the Astros in the thick of a pennant race, the team isn't about to take chances. Keep an eye on this situation.

Astros | Luke Gregerson returning Tuesday

Mon, 11 May 2015 16:07:30 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson is expected to return to the team Tuesday, May 12.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson was put on the emergency family medical list late last week. Chad Qualls picked up a save in his absence over the weekend, but he's expected to return to an eighth-inning setup role with Gregerson returning. Get Gregerson back into your lineups this week.

Astros | Luke Gregerson proving his worth

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 11:03:21 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson hasn't allowed a run and has struck out seven and walked one in seven outings in 2015. His fastball velocity has been in the 89-90 mph range the last three years, and Gregerson added 15 pounds of muscle this offseason to make sure he came out of the gates throwing harder. "Last year I came out throwing 87-88, and right now I'm more 88 to 90. I feel like my velocity is, I shouldn't say back -- I was 90-93 my first couple years, but I feel like maybe those things I was doing to strengthen my body and my arm, I feel like they helped."

Gregerson is also more focused on the grips of his pitches, and he has been very successful against left-handed hitters. All six of the home runs he allowed in 2014 were to right-handed hitters, and lefties hit just .219 against him in 122 at-bats. Gregerson has become more sinker-heavy against lefties in recent years.

Fantasy Tip: Chad Qualls recorded the save last night against the Seattle Mariners, but it was only because Gregerson had pitched each of the previous three nights. Expect Gregerson to be back out in the ninth tonight if a save chance is on the line. Gregerson is off to a solid start and is owned everywhere.

Astros | Luke Gregerson performing well

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 23:31:36 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson has allowed just two hits and a walk while fanning seven in seven innings this season. He is 3-for-3 in save opportunities.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson has distanced himself from Chad Qualls and Pat Neshek, and his closer status is pretty solid right now. Gregerson is still available in some mixed leagues and should be picked up. The Astros are 7-6 on the young season, and he presents great return on his late draft pick or waiver claim.

Astros | Luke Gregerson named Houston closer

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 13:10:33 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson has been named the team's closer.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson being named the closer will surely make him a bit more expensive in fantasy drafts. Chad Qualls and Pat Neshek are now on the outside looking in, but they could see opportunities if Gregerson falters. Gregerson won't give you an edge in reliever K's, but he has proven to do a good job at keeping the ball down and limiting fly balls.

Astros | Three battling for Houston closer job

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 14:50:15 -0800

Houston Astros RPs Luke Gregerson, Chad Qualls and Pat Neshek will all be competing for the closer's job in spring training. Between all three relievers, they have only 95 career saves, with Qualls having 70 of them in 25 combined seasons.

Fantasy Tip: While Qualls has the most experience and most career saves, and he may start out the year as Houston's ninth-inning stopper, if you're drafting a Houston reliever for saves and upside, it should be Gregerson.
